Welcome…… to a Summer of sizzling events. Did you know that last Summer
more than 1700 children from Winchester breezed through the
Summer Reading Challenge? They improved their reading levels
and took part in author events and activities along the way too.
Flip the brochure over for this Summer’s line-up and instructions
on how to get involved this year – your children will thank you for it.
Steven Hunt, Winchester Discovery Centre
Festival season kicks-off with the London
Bridge Ensemble for Winchester Chamber
Music Festival in May (p16–17) before the
highly-anticipated arrival of Winchester

Rumpelstiltskin last season, are back in town

more live music and fabulous puppetry. Talking
of puppets, Winchester favourites Blunderbus
also pay a visit with Dotty the Dragon (p10),
following two sold out performances of How
to Catch a Star. Plus: Time machines and Old
MacDonald? See p15 for an explanation.

Winchester Photographic Society Annual Exhibition
Free entry
Winchester Photographic Society’s Annual
Exhibition of prints and projected images
showcases the very best of its members’
work and is also open to photographers from
around the world.
The consistently high standard of images
on view ensures that this popular exhibition
provides inspiration for experienced
photographers as well as those who are new
to the delights of the digital age.
There will be an opportunity for you to vote
for your personal favourite and decide if you
agree with the judges’ selection.
Grayson Perry The Walthamstow Tapestry
Free entry
The Walthamstow Tapestry explores the
emotional resonance of brand names in
our lives. Charting man’s passage from
birth to death, the tapestry is peppered with
leading brands encountered along the way.
Stripped of their logos and thus much of their
identity, the names run alongside – often
incongruous – depictions of people going
about their everyday lives: walking the dog,
nursing children, skateboarding, hoovering,
and, of course, shopping. Inspired by antique
batik fabrics from Malaysia as well as eastern
European folk art this vast work provides a
colourful, rich and complex visual journey
across our contemporary landscape.
Grayson Perry CBE was awarded the Turner Prize
in 2003 for his ceramics. Since then he has
become a familiar face (both as himself and his
alter-ego Claire) with Channel 4’s All in the Best
Possible Taste in 2012 and BBC Radio 4’s flagship
annual lecture series The Reith Lectures, entitled
Playing to the Gallery, in 2013.

Vision of the Past Free entry
Vision of the Past is an exhibition that
examines the social history of sight loss in
Hampshire over the last 90 years.
Supported by The Heritage Lottery Fund, it
tells the story of how changing attitudes and
legislation have transformed the way that blind
and partially sighted people live and work.
The exhibition focuses on the stories of
ordinary people who, each in different ways,
have led extraordinary lives, describing
the devastation of loss, courageous new
beginnings, their aspirations and challenges.
From sailing ocean going yachts to climbing
Sidney Harbour Bridge to the equally
daunting achievement of leading normal
lives in exceptional circumstances.
The exhibition will also contain some hands-
on objects that will allow people to type their
own Braille for example, or read a newspaper
through specially made sight loss glasses.
LiveWork Play Free entry
Live Work Play is a new exhibition of architecture
and urban design, staged by RIBA Hampshire
and curated by author Lucy Bullivant, showcasing
the rich work of Hampshire-based architects.
There is an architectural legacy in the region of
high creative standards and deep responsiveness
to society, and the exhibits feature a mix of
considered, robust, elegant and ingenious
designs, showing how a variety of highly talented
local architectural practices have added value to
a wide mix of client briefs, responding to today’s
needs across ‘Live Work Play’.

A blistering mix
of performance,

music.
When Zena, the
wife of Environment
Minister Sir Michael
Charbonne, is bundled into the boot of a car,
her life, as she knows it, is obliterated.
Offered a fantastical choice between the
dangerous new, or the safe old, Zena is trapped
between two worlds. But, who, ultimately, is
calling the shots? And what, really, is real?
The Occasional Cabaret was founded in 2010
by Peter Clerke and Catherine Gillard, formerly
joint Artistic Directors of the groundbreaking
Edinburgh based touring ensemble, benchtours.

From the company behind The Very Snowy

Dotty is a baby fire dragon. She lives at the top

In the village below, everyone fears for their lives,
for dragons eat children! Or so they believe. But
Dotty would never eat children! Not ever…
Instead, she loves to gaze down and watch the
children playing in the orchard, and one day,
she decides to pay them a surprise visit. After all,
everyone loves surprises – don’t they?
Blunderbus is proud to present this enchanting
fairy tale adventure with a very happy ending.
This clever new show comes to life with an
irresistible blend of live music, fabulous puppets
and high energy storytelling. Little people aged

Robin Ince – Sony Gold Award winning
comedian and science enthusiast (Radio 4’s
Infinite Monkey Cage with Prof Brian Cox) –
presents another in his line of unhinged stand up
comic lectures.
After dabbling in Darwin and Feynman, and
cleaning out Schrodinger’s Cat, Robin now
delves into his mind and possibly your mind too.
From Freud and Jung to Laing and Milgram,
from rats after rewards to insanity cured by
ink spots, Robin looks at the last 100 years
of psychiatry, psychology and skewiff brain
dabblings. Just how hard is it being a self
conscious being on planet earth?
Come along, he may cure you.
Teddy Time Stories
Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Three Little Pigs
11.30am & 2pm £6 or four for £20

A wonderful introduction to theatre full of
audience participation and the cuddliest
form of storytelling we know of.

teddy bears think so too. They love to hear
stories told from her magic storybook and
then join in the fun of bringing the stories to
life! Bring your own teddy bear along and join
in with the storytelling as Lily transforms her
bedtime to Teddy Time and reveals two of
her favourite stories. Children will love seeing
their teddy become part of the story as Lily
tells the tales.
Children are encouraged to bring their own
teddy bears along with them to help Lily
and her teddy bears tell the story together.

Mark Thomas. Comic, Radio 4 regular, Activist
and occasionally changer of laws, is back.
Ten years ago an activist and close friend of
Mark’s was exposed as a spy for BAE Systems
infiltrating the movement. Now Mark wants to
find him and has some questions to ask. This is
a true story.
It is a personal and timely tale that tries to
unearth what it means to be spied upon by a
corporation under the sanction of the state.
As usual plenty of laughs, some weird
characters, documentary styles, probably a
tear or two and the vague possibility that Mark
might get beaten up in the making of it as he
tries to find out if he wants revenge or if he can
forgive a friend.

Sunday 27 July, 7.30pm £12
BEING 747 are a pop/rock
group based in Huddersfield,
West Yorkshire. They
abandoned the traditional

pieces all about evolution,
greatly inspired by the work
of David Attenborough.
Sharing a fascination with the
wonders of the natural world,
they decided to combine
their musical and vocational
skills to do something truly
worthwhile and tell this
incredible story.

World War Poets
Saturday 7 June
£25 per workshop
(£22.50 if booked
with Quiet Natures)
Even after a century, the
poetry of the First World War
still shines with undimmed
brightness. But what can
poets writing today learn from
these men who wrote in such
different times to our own? In
this workshop you will explore
how Owen, Sassoon, Gurney
and many others created
enduring, innovative work, and
what you can take from them
to add to our own poetry. You
will learn that these writers can
offer many lessons to develop
and enrich your writing.
with Brian Evans-Jones
Quiet NaturesSaturday 21 June £25 per workshop
(£22.50 if booked with Poetry of Conflict)
Michael Longley is one of the British Isles’ foremost poets, known
for his precise observation of nature in quiet but highly skilled
poems. Edward Thomas, writing a century ago in Hampshire,
was another poet in the same tradition, writing much-loved
poems of English pastoral. Both will be featured at the inaugural
Winchester Poetry Festival in September, where Longley will
be the headline poet. This workshop will look in detail at the
achievements of their work, as well as the wider tradition of
British nature poetry to which they belong. You will explore how
their approaches to nature and poetic technique can inspire
and improve your own poetry. Suitable for all levels.
