Williams Parkway
Happenings
April, 2017
Day of Pink
On Monday April 9th, Williams Parkway
had asked all students to recognize
Day of Pink by wearing pink coloured
clothing. This international day was first
recognized when two high school
students in Nova Scotia witnessed a
student being bullied for wearing a
pink shirt. The two students decided to
purchase pink shirts and hand them
out for students to wear at their school.
The entire school took a stand to
bullying and began working together
to prevent homophobic and
transphobic bullying. Since that day,
schools all around the world
participate in this event to help raise
awareness about bullying.

fascinating with all the diverse pieces
of music played at the festival. The
junior band had an amazing debut for
Williams Parkway. They played African
Folk Tale and Tempest. They performed
remarkably well, being their first
performance outside of school. Next
up was the Intermediate Band, they
performed Starlit Night and Imperium.
0The senior band came on stage and
took everyone’s breath away with two
songs Storm Warning, and Jupiter.
There were also three certificates
given to students who went above
and beyond for their dedication and
effort. The awards were given to; Sheel
Sachdev, Saini Ithiaraja, and Vicky
Patel. Thank You to our band students
for representing our school and Mrs.
Brown for all her dedication.
WP Outreach Group Visits Brampton
Retirement Home
The Community Outreach Club has
done a phenomenal job helping out
within the community. This month an
amazing group of grade 6 students
went to the Bramalea Retirement
Residence to spend time with the
seniors. The grade 6 students enjoyed
their time there and the seniors
appreciated every student that made
it. The energy of the younger
generation really excited the seniors
and the history of the seniors helped
our grade 6s understand that giving
back to our community is very
important. Watching the kids play
games with the seniors was a great
experience and also, a break to help
everyone comprehend the
importance of one another. The
Community Outreach group has gone
to animal shelters in the past and soup
kitchens to try and help out in any way
possible. All thanks to Ms. Petgrave,
Ms.Koleilat, and Ms. Lowe, students
were given the opportunity to
participate in these wonderful
opportunities.
WP Students Help at Russell D Barber
Math Night
The School Council invited Jump2Math
to come in for parents and students to
come in and participate in different
activities involving math. Jump2Math is
a multi-sensory approach to teaching
math that incorporates physical
exercise, stretching, cross-body
movements and cooperative learning
in conjunction with visually appealing
floor mats. They had different stations
set up with a student volunteer running
it. WP students participated by helping
coordinate stations. It was a huge
success.
WP Supporting Relay for Life-April
Cancer Month
Julia Bracken, and Katrina Abbot,
along with other groups of students in
the school took the initiative to have a
bake sale and the sale of other goods
to help support the cancer
foundation. Julia explains that she is
inspired to make a difference because
of her grandfather, who has fought 3
types of cancer. “I believe everyone
should be able to lead a healthy and
wholesome life with family and friends,
which is why we should invest into
cancer research” she explains. While
working together as a school, Williams
Parkway has raised over $400 so far,
despite the short time provided for this
task. Everyone at Williams Parkway is
highly encouraged to make a
donation, no matter how miniscule, to
support a greater cause!
Swole
Participating students had the
opportunity to work together in a
variety of team building activities.
Students also set future goals that they
would like to meet. Each time students
meet, they are developing new
strategies that they can implement
into their daily lives.

for a minimum of 80 minutes alongside
licensed instructors and safety gear for
a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Students had an amazing time during
this adventurous and fun event.
Grade 8 Rose Theatre
On April 26th 2017, the grade eight
students went to the Rose Theatre to
go see the play “Immortal Chi”. The
play is about a martial arts master who
got to a point where he was the best
that he could be. The goal of the play
was for students to find their potential
and reach for the top.
WP Speech Competition
During the month of April, Williams
Parkway held their annual school wide
speech competition. Excellence in
Eloquence, Peel’s Public Speaking
Challenge is a great way for students
to improve their grammar,
communication and build their
confidence. Each student wrote and
recited a speech. Students first recited
their speech to their class. A total of 6
finalists were chosen to speak in front
of the school in our gymnasium. This
year’s finalist is Ruhani from grade 8,
and Zuha from grade 6. Both students
represented our school.
Congratulations to Ruhani who won
the competition and moved on to the
Peel Regional finals. Mr.Laidlaw, who
planned our school wide competition
stated, “She has a great shot at
winning”. When we asked Ruhani
about her thoughts, she stated, “I’m
both excited and nervous. I’m happy
to talk about something I care about
because everybody will hear my
opinion”. Williams Parkway are the
defending champions in this
competition.
Mathletics Program
Students are encouraged to use the
program in class and at home to
continue to practice and develop

are so many life skills you can take
away from the band including time
management, organization,
dedication and perseverance” If you
are interested in joining the band
program next year, registration will
begin in May.

Litter-less lunches, turning off all lights
and monitors when they are not in use
are all initiatives we are continuing
with implementing at our school. All
classes were encouraged to go out for
the school-wide clean-up this month.
Thank you to everyone in doing their
part in helping maintain our WP
community. Mrs. S. Patel’s class also
learned about eco-friendly initiatives
to save energy and utilize natural
resources in our everyday lives. Their
class collected used pizza boxes,
created ovens with the boxes and
used solar power to toast pizza bagels.
Everyone had a great time tracking
their observations and enjoying their
treats. Furthermore, this month’s
golden lamp award for conserving
energy was presented to Mr.
Vallance’s grade 8 class. Ms. Kuziw’s
class received the golden lunch bag
award for the most litter-less lunches.
All in all, Mrs. Saini states, “ This month
we celebrated Earth week in various
different ways such as the community
cleanup, creating solar ovens, and
encouraging eco-friendly behavior!”.
Our next project is Plastic Bag Grab
Challenge. Students are encouraged
to bring plastic bags that they do not
require. They will be dropped off at
Walmart to be taken to the recycling
plant. Please see link for more details. http://plasticbaggrab.com/en/resources
IBT/Technology News
On April 19th, grade 6 and 7 IBT
students of Williams Parkway went to
TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival)
Bell Lightbox, as an educational
excursion to explore different
technologies. WP students recognized
the NHL’s 100th anniversary, as they
had seen several clips, marking
significant events that took place in
the NHL. They were also given the
opportunity to make green screen
clips, create stop motion videos, and
use virtual reality goggles! “It was a lot
of fun getting to see the technology”,
said one of the IBT students that
attended the trip.
IBT Meet Microsoft and Little Inventors
On Monday April 24th 2017, Grade 6, 7
and 8 IBT students were pleased to be
introduced to Stacey, a Microsoft
Employee and Dominic Wilcox, the
founder of Little Inventors, which is an
organization that promotes “children's
invention ideas”. Throughout the
workshop, students were able to ask
questions to the presenters regarding
their careers, brainstorm invention ideas
and present them to the audience.
Many kids found the experience to be
eye-opening and educational as it
gave the students insight into real life
experiences. Students were engaged in
the workshop and thoroughly enjoyed.
WP Hosts Lego Showcase
On Thursday April 27th, 2017, Williams
Parkway held its first ever Lego
Showcase for Hanover Public School
and Chris Hadfield Public School. The
showcase was put together to
encourage young students to use
Lego in creative ways. Williams
Parkway students were also able to
showcase their creations in hope to
encourage others. Mr. Vallance hopes
that this Lego showcase will allow Lego
to become much more than a toy but
also become a “learning tool”.
IBT Business Fair
This month, Williams Parkways’ young
entrepreneurs have been busy
stacking up some sales for their
companies. The Grade 8 IBT students
have created 9 business organizations
that provide a variety of products or
services to the staff and students of
Williams Parkway. The businesses are a
great learning opportunity that allows
students to experience realistic
business situations, provides students
with personalized products, and
contribute to charity.

Baby Sitting Club
This month, the babysitting club ended
off on a high note! The entire class left
the final test with a signed card to
show authenticity, and proof that the
students passed the babysitting
course! The class had been studying
babysitting techniques, do’s and
dont’s, examples (real life situations),
and child safety for 7 weeks. Students
also learned how to use a first aid kit,
and how to aid injuries, from simple
one like scrapes or bleeding, and
more intense ones like internal
bleeding, concussions, and seizures.
Many Students in Williams Parkway
learned to be a responsible and
reliable babysitter. They have now
received their certificates and are
able to babysit their families and
friends. Congratulations for your
dedication.
BOOK FAIR
The Book Fair will be coming to Williams
Parkway May 1-5. Get ready to get the
newest books and posters soon.

at Williams Parkway. Students can
come in on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Fridays starting at 8:00 in room
100 to have a quick snack.
It would be greatly appreciated if you
could please have your child bring in
nut-free granola bars, cereal boxes or
packs of juice boxes to help support
the program. Thank you again for your
dedication to our students and
community!

Celebrating Faith and
Culture May 2017
May - Yansa'altt & Flower Moon in
Aboriginal Spirituality
Yansa’altt is celebrated by Nisga'a
people of the Nass Valley in northwest
British Columbia. It is the season when
the woods are filled with fragrance of
berry blossoms that yield the fruit in the
summer.
The fifth moon of Creation is called the
Flower Moon by the Ojibwe people.
During this time, all plants display their
Spirit sides for the World to see. During
this period of new life, all are
encouraged to discover their spiritual
essences.
May 1 - Beltaine in Wicca
Celebrated by Wiccans, Beltane is one
of the four major sabbats (seasonal
days of celebration). Beltane is a word
that refers to the 'fire of the Celtic God
of light.' This sabbat is the last of the
spring fertility festivals, when nature is
blooming and full of life. Beltane has
also been known as May Day, as it is
traditionally celebrated on May 1 with
May pole dances. Another custom is
to make a small bel-fire (a bonfire, or
light a few candles) and either leap
over the flames or walk between two
bonfires for fertility and prosperity.
May 1 - 12th Day of Ridvan in Bahá'í
The 12th Day of Ridvan concludes this
important Bahá’í festival. The festival of
Ridvan, considered the "most great
festival”, is a 12-day celebration that
starts at sunset April 19 and runs until
sunset May 1. The most important
holyday on the Bahá’í calendar,
Ridvan (pronounced "Riz-wan")
commemorates the public declaration
of the prophethood of Baha'u'llah, the
acknowledged founder of the Bahá’í
faith. The first, ninth and 12th days of
Ridvan are all major Bahá’í holy days.
These days are marked by communal
prayers and celebrations and are days
when work is suspended by adherents.
May 10 - Sakyamuni Buddha's Birthday
in Buddhism
On this day, Buddhists celebrate the
birth of the founder of their religion.
Siddhartha Gautama was born in the
sixth century BCE, a prince of a north
kingdom in ancient India. According
to Buddhist scriptures, he was so
concerned about the inequities of
human life that when he was 29, he
gave up his royal position, left home
and strove to live a virtuous life. At age
35, he attained enlightenment and
became Sakyamuni Buddha. He died
at the age of about 80, and left a
number of his students who continued
to study and spread Buddhism all over
the world. Buddhists celebrate this day
by visiting temples to make offerings of
prayers, incense, fruits, flowers and
donations.
May 10 - Wesak Day/Buddha Day in
Buddhism
For followers of Buddhism, mainly in Sri
Lanka, Wesak is the major festival of
the year, celebrating the birth,
enlightenment and death of the
Buddha on the day of the first full
moon in May (except in a leap year
when the festival is held in June).
Adherents visit temples and pay
homage to the Buddha with candles,
flowers and incense. Chanting and
prayers are important part of the day.
May 10 or 11 – Nisfu Sha'ban in Islam
Nisfu Sha'ban is observed on the
fifteenth day of the eight month,
Shaban in the Islamic calendar. The
adherents observe prayers through a
night long vigil, read the Quran and
ask for forgiveness on this holyday.
May 16 – June 3 - the month of
'Azamat in Bahá'í
In the Bahá'í calendar, there are 19
months of 19 days each. Each month
represents an attribute of God. May 16
is the Feast Day for the beginning of
'Azamat, the fourth month of the
Bahá'í calendar, signifying "grandeur."
The Bahá'í day starts and ends at
sunset. The first day of each month is
known as a Feast Day.
Eve of May 22 to May 23 - Declaration
of the Báb in Bahá'í
Siyyid Alí Muhammád declared himself
to be the Báb, or "Gate of God," at
two hours and eleven minutes after
sunset on the evening of May 22, 1844
in the Persian city of Shiraz. Members
of the Bahá'í faith believe that the Báb
was the herald and forerunner of
2Bahá'u'lláh, the messenger of God for
this age. The date of his declaration
marks the beginning of the Bahá'í faith
and calendar. Every year on this date,
Bahá'ís around the world gather to
commemorate this event. They abstain
from work on this day.
May 22 - Victoria Day in Canada
Canadians celebrate Queen Victoria's
birthday on the Monday proceeding
May 24 which is the actual birthday of
the Sovereign. The holiday was
declared by the Legislature of the
Province of Canada in 1845.
May 23 to 26 - Aboriginal
Week in Aboriginal Spirituality
The second last week in May is when
the Aboriginal communities across
Canada celebrate their culture,
heritage and spirituality. During this
period many Pow-Wows and
gatherings are held.

Zoroastrianism
On May 24, Zoroastrians following the
Shenshahi calendar, commemorate
the anniversary of the death of
Prophet Zarathustra (Zoroaster), the
founder of their faith. Scholars say he
lived between 1500 and 1000 bce in
northeast Iran.
May 25 - Ascension in Christianity
Forty days after Easter, Christians
celebrate Jesus' ascension from Earth
into heaven. The day is observed with
worship, including prayers and music.
In the Eastern Orthodox Church,
Ascension, also known as analepsis, is
one of 12 great feasts and will be
observed on May 25th
May 27 - Ramadan in Islam
Ramadan, the ninth month of the
Islamic Calendar, is considered one of
the holiest months of the year by
followers of Islam. It is during Ramadan
that Muslims observe the Fast for the
entire month. Muslims fast (abstaining
from both food and drink) during the
daylight hours and in the evening eat
small meals and visit the mosque and
family. It is a time of worship and
contemplation. Also a time to
strengthen family, community ties and
supporting the needy.
Eve of May 27 to May 28 - Ascension
of Bahá'u'lláh in Bahá'í
This date commemorates the death in
1892 of Bahá'u'lláh, the founder of the
Bahá'í faith. This anniversary is a day of
rest and is often observed by prayers
and readings. Bahá'ís suspend work on
this day.
Eve of May 30 to June 1 - Shavuot in
Judaism
Shavuot, also known as Pentecost,
marks the conclusion of the period of
seven weeks that follows Pesach
(Passover). Shavuot commemorates
the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai.
The observance of Shavuot begins at
sunset on June 11 and is celebrated
for one or two days based on the
adherents' beliefs. Specific scriptures
are read in the synagogue to
commemorate Shavuot.
