Why your business should reduce its energy consumption.

By Utilitywise plcFebruary 2014

We are Utilitywise.

We help businesses reduce their energy and water consumption and lower their carbon footprint.

We have thousands of business customers...

… and we manage even more business energy meters.

We know that businesses in the UK are facing some significant energy challenges.

1. Rising prices.Rising energy prices hurt your bottom line and reduce productivity.

2. Changes to legislation.Keeping up with government and EU climate legislation is a drain on your resources.

3. Corporate social responsibility.Your customers want to know that your business cares about climate change.

We think there are two possible responses to these challenges.

Option A: Keep doing what you’re doing.Keep paying high prices, keep inefficient equipment, keep ignoring changes to legislation, and keep disappointing your customers.

Option B: Reduce your energy consumption.Change the way you use energy, get energy efficient, respond to legislation, and make your customers happy by reducing your carbon footprint.

We recommend Option B.Only by reducing your business energy consumption will you realise long-term savings.

Your business finances will improve and productivity will increase.

Your business will become more energy efficient.

Your customers will believe in your business.

What does this look like in practice?

We helped South Tyneside Indoor Bowls & Social Club in North East England with Option B.

We carried out an Energy Audit and found out how they could reduce their energy consumption.

We learned that they could make real savings through lighting upgrades and behavioural change programmes.• 30 year old light fittings replaced with a modern and efficient

lighting system.• Employees were encouraged to switch off lights and

equipment when not in use.• Behavioural change programmes can have a powerful impact

on business energy consumption.

Our Ecofit Team went in and made the physical changes. They also helped implement behavioural change programmes.

After twelve months, energy consumption dropped from 145,246 kWh to just 77,230 kWh per year.

They also got a great new lighting system.“Whilst the primary aim of this project was to reduce our energy consumption, we have also gained a far superior lighting system over the bowls arena than before the project commenced. Without exception our members (who number over 400) have been more than complimentary.”

Geoff Driver, Secretary STIBC

You could do the same for your business.

In conclusion: UK businesses are facing major energy challenges.• Rising prices.• Changing legislation.• Corporate social responsibility.

There are two possible responses.

Option A:Keep going as you are.• Keep paying high prices.• Keep ignoring legislation changes.• Keep disregarding your customers

and their climate values.

Option B:Reduce your energy consumption.• Use less energy.• Stay on top of legislation.• Get energy efficient and show your

customers you care about the environment and their communities.

Which will you choose?
