Commissioned by Joshua Waterman for his

wife in 1876, this marker had a heck of a

time getting to America. The 12-foot marble

piece was created in Italy and shipped from

Rome, only to be lost at sea when the ship

sank near Spain. Two years later it was

retrieved, only to tumble off another ship in

the Hudson River.

Once retrieved and placed at Elmwood, a

1919 storm knocked it over and broke it.

Some call it eerie. Others say it’s cursed.

It gave me a stomach ache and flung water

on my mother.

BLOODY RUN

RED ORBS AND STREAMS

An area of Elmwood lies on Bloody Run, which was the nickname given a creek

where a massacre went down in 1763. Chief Pontiac and 250 of his braves laid in

wait for British soldiers to come marching across a bridge, at which time they let

loose with a “solid sheet of fire,” slaying between 60 and 160 British soldiers. The

underlying creek ran red for days. Known as a paranormal hotspot, the area is now

home to bright orbs, unusual mists and strange apparitions floating about. While I

was uncertain of the exact location of Bloody Run, I did capture orange-red orb-

like lights and what appears to be a stream of blood near certain gravesites.
