Studies show that if a student cannot read by third grade, he or she is four times more likely to leave school without a diploma.

In the 2012-2013 school year, only 21 percent of Mississippi fourth graders passed the national reading exam, and a little more than half of eighth graders passed the state language arts exam.

We have an obligation to make sure our children are successful in the competitive college and career world — and that success starts with literacy.
