• Does a school-based intervention for 8th graders lower their risk for involvement in criminal or violent activity?

OUTLINE

Population: 8th graders; 14 schools; 7 communities

Intervention:Academic Support + Conflict-Management Skills

Control:8th graders in same school not in programme

Outcome:Lowering Risk Profile for Criminal Involvement(dropout rate, educational attainment, disruptive behaviour)

Time: 1 year; cohort tracked over 4 years

STUDY DESIGN

• Eligibility criteria: Standardised exam results, school grades, attendance, contact with the justice system, disruptive behaviour in school, sex (as a ratio)

• Randomisation (possibly stratified)

MEASUREMENT

• Registration form personal data, parent consent, student assent

• Attendance records• Pre- and post-testing• School grades / rank• Standardised tests: Grade Nine Achievement

Test, CXC-CSEC (O-Level / GCSE equivalent)• Reported fights; remand data
