Introduction

We will be showing screen grabs of each step from the iPad (left) and iPhone (right)… sorry android users!

Install Twitter

First navigate to the app store.

Install Twitter

Search for “twitter”.

Click the little cloud to download and install.

You may need to enter your iTunes password. If you don’t have

one please set one up.

Click “Open” when the download is finished.

Welcome to Twitter! First you want to create an

account, so click “Sign up”.

Your “Username” AKA your “Twitter handle” will be how people find you. The

one suggested is often difficult to remember, so select something more recognizable, such as a first name followed by “NHS”.

Now go back to the “Home” page and you’ll see a more populated “Twitter Feed”. Take a quick look to familiarise yourself with the type of tweets sent out. When you see something you’d like to share, you can “Re-tweet” another person’s message, or save it for later via “Favorites”.

First click on the “@ Connect” tab (or “Notifications” on the newer version/Android). This is where you’ll see all tweets that have your Twitter handle in them.

the new version). This will show topics that your followers are talking about…

The “Search” box can be used to look for hashtags too! Search for

#heemtwitterclinic and you will be shown all messages containing that #!

re-tweets that you’ve sent out, your new followers, and more!

Why can twitter help with events and

campaigns?

• Another form of communication to email / newsletter / word of mouth

• Immediacy of message / Sharing resources instantly / response

• Reach, ie “beyond the venue”

Strategy

You may want to think about / draw up a strategy. Heres an example: POSTE

• People – who is your audience?

• Objectives – what is your message ? What does success look like?

• Strategy – how are you going to get your message to your audience?

• Technology – what are you going to use?

• Evaluation – how are you going to measure the outcomes?

Twijector helps display the conversation encourage participation. Shows comment / opinion from those out of the room so can be referenced by speakers.

Think your audience is going to engage well in twitter? a live polling tool like TwtPoll or Poll Everywhere. An alternative to clickers, delegates use the poll link to enter their responses via Twitter while you show the live totals on screen. Can include text messages and text responses (eg a mass brainstorm)

• Keep checking the # - set it in your saved searches, use Hootsuite to alert you

• Use twitter and the # as another way of asking for feedback and sharing resources

• Continuing the conversation / momentum through to the next event

FAQs

Q. Why Twitter and not Facebook etc.?

A. Twitter is the most widely used social network in terms of presence in the healthcare environment. Also, we do not currently have the resources to run more than one account full time. Also, Twitter is fairly easy to use and maintain due to the 140 character limit on tweets. However, we may look at expanding our presence once the HEEM Twitter presence has matured successfully.

Q. Can I rename my account?

A. Yes you can! You can edit many features about your profile by navigating to the settings page.

Q. I already have a Twitter account, should I create a new one just for use at work?

A. It depends. If you want to use Twitter for personal opinions and points of view not associated with work i.e. football, films etc., then it would be better to make a personal and work account. If you just want a Twitter account for professional networking and work related activities, then just the one account will do.

Some employees are worried that professionals/colleagues may follow their personal account when they'd prefer only friends to see their tweets. In this instance, you can make your personal account private, meaning that any followers must be approved before they can view your tweets.

Q. How do I get followers/follow?

A. When getting started you should ask your colleagues whether they're on Twitter and follow them directly or via one of their tweets. From here, you should follow those who post interesting content to your Twitter feed. Follower counts tend to grow slowly at first, however as time goes on, more and more people will be exposed to your tweets and the follow count will grow organically.

Q. What should I tweet about?

A. In a work context, colleagues tweet about projects they're working on, events they've been to, changes associated with the NHS and HEEM etc. However, don't feel you have to be too clinical, the idea is to begin conversations.

In terms of what you shouldn't tweet about, just think "Would I say this to a stranger?" If the answer is yes, then go ahead, if it's a no, then think twice about posting it for all to see!

FAQs

Q. How often should I Tweet

A. There is not rule on how often you should tweet in terms of a personal account, it's as much as you feel is necessary. 5-15 a day is generally best, but don’t force it!

Q. What if I tweet something then change my mind? Can I edit/delete a tweet?

A. You can't edit a tweet once it's been sent, however you can easily delete a tweet.

Q. What does HEEM expect from me in my tweets?

A. Using Twitter is supposed to benefit both HEEM and employees. For HEEM, it gives more exposure to topics and issues that might want to be communicated with trainees, trainers, employees etc, and for you, it allows for networking with others that fall under the HEE umbrella and further.
