Psalm 30:4 (NASB)

4  Sing praise to the LORD, you His godly ones, And give thanks

to His holy name.

SCRIPTURE READING

Romans 12:1-8

Concerning the Miraculous Manifestations of the Holy Spirit

• 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 - 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. NASU

1 Corinthians 13:8-10 - 8 Love never fails; but if there are

gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are

tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part;

10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be

done away. NASU

2 Timothy 3:16-17 - 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for

teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. NASU

There are also gifts of ministry given to us by the Holy Spirit

• Romans 12:3-8 - 3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. 4 For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy (also means to speak forth or preach the word), according to the proportion of his faith; 7 if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. NASU

TO CONFIRM THE WORD

• TO AUTHENTICATE THE MESSAGE.

• Hebrews 2:2-4- For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience

received a just penalty, how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, God

also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.

The PURPOSE OF THE MIRACULOUS GIFTS

• Not to entertain. Not to amaze. Not to cure the world’s inhabitants of illness and death.

• Jesus said in Luke 19:10 (NASB) 10

 "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.“

• Matthew 20: 28 – “28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." NAS

Romans 5:12 – 12 Therefore, just as through one man sin

entered into the world, and death through sin,

and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—

NASU

John 5:2-3 (NASB-U) Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep

gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes. [3] In these lay a multitude of those who were

sick, blind, lame, and withered, [waiting for the

moving of the waters;

• John 11:41-45 (NASB-U) So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. [42] "I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me." [43] When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth." [44] The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go." [45] Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary, and saw what He had done, believed in Him.

John 12:10-11- But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also;

because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.

• 1 Corinthians 14:27-33 (NASB) 27  If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret; 28  but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the church; and let him speak to himself and to God. 29  Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others pass judgment. 30  But if a revelation is made to another who is seated, the first one must keep silent. 31  For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted; 32  and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets; 33  for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

• 1 Corinthians 14:37-40 (NASB) 37  If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord's commandment. 38  But if anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized. 39  Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues. 40  But all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner.

MIRACLES WERE NOT PERFORMED BY GOD JUST FOR THE MIRACLES SAKE

• 1 Tim 5:23- No longer drink water exclusively, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.

• 2 Tim. 1:6 (NASB-U) For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

• Galatians 4:13-15- but you know that it was because of a bodily illness that I preached the gospel to you the first time; and that which was a trial to you in my bodily condition you did not despise or loathe, but you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus Himself. Where then is that sense of blessing you had? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.

• Philippians 2:25-27 - 25 But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my need; 26 because he was longing for you all and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. 27 For indeed he was sick to the point of death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow. NASU

Mark 16 after giving the great commission vs 20 says

And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word

by the signs that followed.

MIRACLES/MIRACULOUS GIFTS WERE GIVEN TO CONFIRM THE

WORD—

NOT EVERYONE WAS GIFTED

• 1 Cor. 12:29-30 (NASB-U) All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? [30] All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?

• 1 Corinthians 13:8-11 - 8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away.

James 1:25 - But one who looks intently at the

perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it,

not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man

will be blessed in what he does.
