Applications by the NumbersIn 2009-2010, >80 EES related faculty advertisements

42 of 50 US States3 countries: Singapore, Norway, CanadaPrivate, Public, R1, R2, R3, PUIs

50-300 … applicants per position8-15 … applicants for telephone interview2-5 … applicants for onsite visit0-1 … applicant offered position

David Ladner - Brief History• PhD 2009, University of Illinois at Urbana-

Champaign• Postdoc, Arizona State University– August 2009 to July 2010

• Assistant Professor, Clemson University– August 2010 to present

Ladner search process• Applied to 15 schools• Two and a half (and a canceled) interview trips– Three phone interviews

• Two offers• One job

Interesting Notes / Lessons Learned• The two schools where I interviewed were

places where I had previous face-to-face interaction with the chair.

• I was not the first choice at either of the schools from whom offers were received.

• I should have prepared better for phone interviews.

• I should have been more interested (truly interested) in others’ work.

Shelie Miller - Brief History• PhD University of Illinois at Chicago, 2006

• Assistant Professor, Clemson University– Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences – 2006-2010

• Assistant Professor, University of Michigan– School of Natural Resources and Environment– 2010-present

Thoughts• Take advantage of opportunities during PhD– Writing, teaching, leadership

• Consider “fit” when applying for jobs

• Consider who you’re talking to on interviews– Junior, mid-career, senior

Lessons Learned

Universities advertise for different reasons and schedules

Postdocs were tremendous for appointment preparation (accepted

position, then 8 mo. postdoc)

Interview and negotiate from “informed” positions and prioritize…

Quotes

Get advice from new professors when you interview and negotiate

Answer questions in a way you are comfortable

Search Experience Start Aug 2008, End Apr 2010 Applied to many North American

and European schools 35+ redacted b/c of the “economy” 12 total telephone & onsite
