Choosing Categories in

Graduated Legend

Choosing Categories in Legend

There are variety of ways to divide data into categories the most popular are

• natural breaks (arc view default)

•Equal Area (same spatial coverage)

•Equal Interval (same span across each category)

•Quantiles (same count of entities in each category)

•Standard Deviation

Today we will experiment with Quantiles

• Select Classify, Quantile, then 4 classes and round numbers at whole values

Result

Now you experiment

• Do different classifications show different patterns??

• Why?

• Which might be best• Why?

Labels

• Let’s say that the default labels in ArcView weren’t what you want, how do you change them???

Labels

• Let’s say that the default labels in ArcView weren’t what you want, how do you change them???

Labels

• Note how if the legend starts at 60% (county with highest concentration of Asians) and uses equal interval we don’t have much

Labels

• Let’s make our categories go 5, 10, 15, 20% and all above and see if things are better

1. Set things to 5 categories

2. Go into the values window and change min and max

settings

Changes made

Better but not good enough

• How would you continue to improve this?????
