Dispensa corso Inglese Base -A.A. 2018/19 docente: Antonio CafieroIMPARIAMO L’INGLESE CHE SERVE E…STIAMO BENE INSIEME
Buon anno accademico.

Lezione 1 – La pronuncia dell’alfabeto e la
pronuncia in generale24/09/18
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nEWfzzWw8o
(fonte: YouTube)3
4
THE, FURTHER, THEATRE, THEN, NORTHERN, THOSE, THOUSAND, ETHIC, THIN
5
(lingua sotto incisivi superiori)
1. afono esempi: THE, THEN, THOSE2. sonoro esempi: THEATRE, THOUSAND, THIN
il “GH”ENOUGH, MIGHT, GHOST, TOUGH, LIGHT, NIGHT, LAUGH, TROUGH, BOROUGH, ALTHOUGH
il “CC”ACCESS, ACCORDING, ACCIDENT, ACCELERATION, ACCUMULATOR, ACCENT, ACCOUNT
la “Y”LADY, TYPE, PRETTY, YOUNG, MY, SPY, DRY, SKYPE, CYCLE, GYM,

Lesson 4 – English Pronounciation & Auxiliary Verbs15/10/18
How to pronounce “GN” in English:
18
IGNORANCE DIGNITY DRAGNET SIGNER IGNIS REIGN GNARLY EGGNOG GNU MAGNIFIER MALIGNANT MAGNITUDE IGNORANT RESIGNED IGNOMINY
Ripetiamo con traduzione:
IGNORANCE Ignoranza
DIGNITY Dignità
DRAGNET Rete per pesci, Trappola
SIGNER Firmatario (eccezione)
IGNEOUS Igneo, di fuoco
REIGN Regno
GNARLY Nodoso
EGGNOG Zabaione
GNU Gnu
MAGNIFIER Evidenziatore
19
MALIGNANT Maligno
MAGNITUDE Ampiezza, Intensità
IGNORANT Ignorante
IGNOMINY Ignominia
How to pronounce “KN” in English:

Esempio:
Essi erano: They were ---> They’re
Essi sono: They are ---> They’re

Il “to do” si usa per costruire le frasi negative, interrogative e negativo-interrogative in presenza di verbi che non siano gli ausiliari “To Be”, “To Have” e “To Do”.
Può svolgere lo stesso ruolo anche con “to be”, “to have” e “to do”, ma solo quando questi sono usati con il loro significato assoluto di ESSERE, AVERE e FARE e non come ausiliari.

Lesson 9 – Use of gerund in english
November 26th, 2018
Come si forma il gerundio in inglese:
VERB ingWork ing
WORKING
watch watchingfind findingsearch searchingbuy buyingpress pressingcheck checkingdrop dropping (raddoppia la “p”)make makingetc….
Cosa indica il gerundio in inglese?
36
Gerund
1 Forma Progressiva
2 Infinito
3 Soggetto/ Sostantivo
AUSILIARE + GERUNDIO
o YOU ARE GOING TO SCHOOLo I AM CHECKING MY CLOTHESo THEY WERE COMING BACK HOME
Es.:
I was waiting for her, while she couldn’t leave her job we will be looking for a hotel when we’ll arrive in London she is studying in the living room
negli esempi la forma progressiva è supportata dal verbo ausiliare “to BE”
I AM in forma contratta (più usata) I’M
YOU ARE YOU’RE
HE/SHE/IT IS HE’S/SHE’S/IT’S
WE ARE WE’RE
YOU ARE YOU’RE
THEY ARE THEY’RE
“to be” in questi casi prende il significato di “stare” piuttosto che di “essere”
37
1
Forma Progressiva
I’M GOING TO SCHOOL THIS MORNING SHE’S GOING TO BUY A NEW CAR WE’RE COMING AT NINE THEY’RE DRESSING TO GO TO DISCOTEQUE
_____________________________________________________________________
MI PIACE LEGGERE I LOVE READING
MAI E POI MAI dire “I LOVE TO READ”
FACCIO BICICLETTA PER TENERMI IN FORMA I DO BIKING TO KEEP ON SHAPE
ADORO FARE IL BAGNO DI MATTINA I LOVE BATHING IN THE MORNING
DETESTO ARRIVARE TARDI I HATE BEING LATE

Lesson 11 – Learning by playing Playing by learning
december 10th , 2018
I will show you some texts. You are supposed to understand which famous “stuff” is behind the english words. Do you like it?
Let’s start:
This solitary hill has always been dear to me
And this hedge, which prevents me from seeing most of the endless horizon.
But when I sit and gaze, I imagine, in my thoughts, endless spaces beyond the hedge
An all-encompassing silence and a deeply profound quiet,
To the point that my heart is quite overwhelmed.
And when I hear the wind rustling through the trees
I compare its voice to the infinite silence.
And eternity occurs to me, and all the ages past, and the present time, and its sound.
Amidst this immensity my thought drowns:
And to flounder in this sea is sweet to me.
L’infinito, G. Leopardi
42
I think that dream like that will never return
I painted my hands and face blue
Then all of sudden I was abducted by the wind
and I started to fly in the infinite sky
To fly ho ho, to sing ho ho hoho
In the blue, painted blue happy to stay up there,
And I flew and flew happy, higher than the sun and yet more up,
While the world slowly dissappeared down below,
A sweet music playing just for me
To fly ho ho, to sing ho ho hoho
In the blue, painted blue happy to stay up there
But all dreams vanish at dawn because
When the moon sets, it takes dreams with itself
But I keep dreaming in your beautiful eyes,
That are blue as the sky spangled with stars
To fly, ho ho, to sing ho ho hoho,
In the blue of your blue eyes happy to be down here
And I keep flying, happy higher than the sun and yet more up,
While the world is slowly vanishing in your blue eyes
Your voice is a soft music that plays for me
To fly ho ho, to sing ho ho hoho
In the blue of your blue eyes, happy to be down here43
In the blue of your blue eyes, happy to be down here
With you.
It’s Christmas Time

Baci tra uomini, no o poco usati.

Lesson 24: Primo AprileApril 1st , 2019
85
Source of April Fools’ Day
Before the issue of new Gregorian Calendar, in England, the 1st of April was the year first day celebration. It was a farming celebration.
Due to the lack of communications, a lot of people were not updated about the calendar change and therefore they kept on celebrating that day as before.
Because of that, people who were aligned with new calendar started to call “FOOLS” the people who were not updated and generally that people were the ones living in the countryside and far from main cities. The ones we use to call “cafoni”.
Citizens started to make jokes to those boors.
During the centuries this original motivation has left room to modern 1st of April that is quite like the way it is celebrated all over the world with jokes, tricks and hoaxes.

86
The most famous April Fools’ joke ever
In 1957, the BBC broadcast a three-minute report on a Swiss family gathering spaghetti from trees.
At that time many people believed the joke.
In Britain, in fact, Italian cuisine was not as widespread as now and spaghetti was an exotic dish.
The April Fools, the protagonists of the service said, had occurred to the Austrian operator Charles de Jaeger who had remembered when, as a child, he was picked up by the teacher at school:
"You are so stupid that if they told you that spaghetti grows on trees you would believe it ".
The day after the broadcast, there were hundreds of phone calls from spectators asking for clarification on the service, also asking for advice on how to cultivate the miraculous plant.
The ironic answer of the Bbbc certainly did not wait:
"Put a handful of spaghetti in a bowl with some tomato sauce and hope"

Lesson 27: Subjunctive & Conditional
April 29th , 2019
Congiuntivo italiano Indicativo inglese Esempio
Congiuntivo Presente(che io sia)
Simple Present(I am)
I think you are tired.Credo che tu sia stanco.
Congiuntivo Imperfetto(che io fossi)
Simple Past*I was
you werehe-she-it was / were
we wereyou werethey were)
I thought I was prepared to go outPensavo che fossi pronto per uscireIf I were you, I would work harder.Se fossi in te, lavorerei di più.
Congiuntivo Passato(che io sia andato)
Present Perfect(I have gone)
I think he has gone to his parents’.Credo che sia andato a casa dei suoi genitori.
Congiuntivo Trapassato Past Perfect If you had gone to Mark’s party,
96
(che io fossi andato) (I had gone) you would have met Susan.
If I were you, I wouldn’t go -> fossi in te, non ci Andrei
If they were ready, we could start -> se fossero pronti, potremmo partire
If he were nice with her, she wouldn’t be so hard -> se fosse stato carino con lei, non sarebbe stato così dura
God save the queen! = Dio salvi la regina! I wish you have a nice day = Auguro che tu passi una bella giornata
CONDITIONAL (CONDIZIONALE)
Condizionale Presente (io andrei) Condizionale Passato (io sarei andato)
Condizionale Presente
97

Would you go…?Andresti…?
Quanto sopra è altresì valido nei casi in cui invece di WOULD si debba utilizzare SHOULD (dovrei) e/o COULD (potrei)

Il condizionale presente dei verbi modali
I verbi modali utilizzano forme condizionali particolari.
Verbo modaleCondizionale Esempio
CAN (potere, avere la possibilità di…)
could I could leave tomorrow.Potrei partire domani.
MAY (potere, essere possibile che…)
might It might rain tonight.Potrebbe piovere questa sera.
Condizionale passato
Il Condizionale Passato inglese si costruisce utilizzando il condizionale presente di to have ed il participio passato del verbo.

Lesson 28: FeelingsMay 6th , 2019
Come descriviamo sensazioni e sentimenti in inglese
Innanzitutto, distinguiamo tra
Sentimenti/Sensazioni --> FEELINGS
Umore --> MOOD __________________________________________________
100
Mi sento stanco I feel tired
Sento stanchezza I feel tiredness
Aggettivo in inglese

Aggettivo in italiano
Sostantivo in italiano
happy happiness felice felicitàaffectionate affection affettuoso affettoafraid fear impaurito pauraangry anger arrabbiato rabbiaanguished anguish angosciato angosciaannoyed annoyance infastidito fastidio

I’m disgusted of such traffic jam”.
Emotioned in inglese significa commosso
Nervous invece significa emozionato
103
Lesson 29: Comparativi & Superlativi
May 20th , 2019
AGGETTIVO COMPARATIVO SUPERLATIVO
nice nicer the nicest
big * bigger the biggest
small smaller the smallest
fat * fatter the fattest
104
AGGETTIVO COMPARATIVO SUPERLATIVO
happy * happier the happiest
easy * easier the easiest
clever cleverer / more clever
the cleverest / the most clever
simple simpler / more simple
the simplest / the most simple
narrow narrower / more narrow
the narrowest / the most narrow
AGGETTIVO COMPARATIVO SUPERLATIVO
famous more famous the most famous
interesting more interesting the most interesting
comfortable more comfortable the most comfortable
attractive more attractive the most attractive
AGGETTIVO COMPARATIVO SUPERLATIVO
good / well better the best
bad worse the worst
much more the most
little less the least105
far further / farther the furthest / farthest
Esempio: I work harder than you (Io lavoro più di te)Esempio: She is more attractive than her sister (Lei è più attraente della sorella)NOTA BENE: nel comparativo di minoranza l’aggettivo è preceduto da “less” (meno). Esempio: Michael is less tall than Paul (Michael è meno alto di Paul)
Esempio: Italy is as beautiful as France (L’Italia è bella come la Francia)Esempio: The king is as rich as the imperator (Il re è ricco quanto l’imperatore)Esempio: Brasil is not as cold as Germany (Il Brasile non è freddo come la Germania)
In inglese si ottengono anteponendo l’avverbio “very” (molto/tanto) all’aggettivo.
Solitamente l’aggettivo superlativo è preceduto dall’articolo determinativo “the”.
106
preceduto da “in”, se si tratta di una frase relativa si antepone “that”, altrimenti “of”.
Esempio: New York seems to be the biggest city in the world (Sembra che New York sia la città più grande al mondo)Esempio: My house is the most comfortable of the neighborhood (La mia casa è la più accogliente del quartiere)Esempio: Mary is the nicest person that I know (Mary è la persona più carina che conosca)
Si traducono utilizzando “more” e “less”:Esempio: The more you read the more you learn (più leggi, più impari)Esempio: The less I eat the more I get slim (meno mangio più dimagriscoEsempio: The less they study, the less they grow (meno studiano, meno crescono)
HOMEWORK:
