What is Videoconferencing?

The live connection of two or more people using video, computing, and communication technologies to allow them to meet face-to-face.

Participants can be at two or more different locations, domestic or international.

Videoconference over IP H.323

• Works with existing infrastructure

• Facilitates faster connections

• Can be managed locally

• Application sharing and collaboration.

• Cost effective

Types of Conferences

• Point to Point (Point to Group or Group to Group): This is the simplest form of conference where two computers connect directly with each other using some form of conferencing software. All you have to do is type in the IP address of the person or class you would like to connect with for a conference. Much the same way you would dial up a friend on the phone.

• Multi-point Conference: This is where many people can participate and collaborate. To do this, each person or class has to connect to a Bridge. The connection is made by typing in the IP address of the Bridge. The Bridge receives everything that is transmitted by the group and then transmits it to the others in the group.

• Webcasting: This is one way conferencing much like television. One computer transmits audio and video to all those who are connected. Streaming video is a good example.

IDEAS

• NYS History Mystery• Bluebonnet Conference Student Projects

Classrooms partner with student teachers from local universities. The purpose of this

videoconference/Internet project is to increase reading understanding, learn presentation skills, build teamwork with classmates, and increase self-confidence by working with teachers and college mentors.

• Holidays Around the WorldClasses will prepare a 5-10 minute presentation to share the culture and customs of a winter holiday in the country of their choice via videoconference. Students may use drawings, artwork, music, songs, dance s, skits, or food

demonstrations in their presentations.• Monster Match

Two classrooms will be paired up and each class will create a monster. The class will then write a description of their monster and email that to their partner class. Each class will recreate the other class’ monster by following the emailed directions. Classes will meet via videoconference to compare the original monsters with the recreated monsters.
