Solving “The Math Problem”

• Math is a huge hurdle for CC students

• Major math curriculum changes – Not everybody needs calculus

• Math placement changes – New Math placement tests • COMPASS now used for English only

– Procedures slightly different at SFCC, SCC & IEL• HS Pre-Calculus agreement (SFCC)

– State Need Grants up $136 ($2,690 max for CC students)

Budget Cuts

• Empty positions

• Student services strained– Admissions, testing, counseling & financial aid

• Firm Financial Aid deadlines – June 15th

• Reduced outreach to HSs

Enrollment boom at CCS

• CCS opens doors even wider– Competition for limited resources

• Unprepared students will struggle to enroll– Early application, FAFSA, etc.

– Your students need good information more than ever

CCS Outreach‘Serving counselors and future students’

• Big Job– 80+ HSs, 52 school districts

• Off-campus outreach resources reduced• Campus New Student Entry focus on incoming

students

– Campus Visits, Orientation, FYI, Student Ambassadors

For every 100 college-bound Spokane-area 2007 HS grads…

11 choose out-of-state universities4 choose WA private universities

52 choose community colleges33 choose WA public universities

For every 100 college-bound seniors……82 (45%) don’t choose college

CCS Outreach targets the “Middle 50%”

The Middle 50% tends to…

• …be low income & first generation• …be disproportionally students of color• …lack parental support (few helicopter

parents)• …lack fundamental college info (FAFSA,

deadlines, college-going vocabulary)• …underutilize “Opt-In” post-HS resources– Career centers, college fairs, parent nights,

lunchroom tables, etc.

Accessing the Middle 50%

• Classroom presentations: multiple, sequential, full-period– ‘Captive Audience’ not ‘Opt-In’

–Math 12, English 12, CWI, Senior Project, CTE

– Not AP classes

• How you can help: – Give me a teacher’s name

CCS Outreach Presentation

• Worthwhile for any student, but focused on the Middle 50%

2. Costs of college
