Hey, Grinder Guy my fuel bills arecosting me my profits! What should I do?
Like every other consumer, those ofus in the recycling world are sufferingfrom high fuel prices as well. Sadly, itis multiplied times the number ofpieces of equipment we all have. Ifyour pricing considerations do not in-clude a fuel surcharge option, you aregoing to keep losing profits as fuelprices increase. So when it comes tomaking a change to solve this prob-lem, what are owner/operators doingto turn this situation around?
With some 1000 plus hp grinders us-ing 40 or 50 gallons of fuel every hour,your fuel bill exceeds $200 an hour.That is painful and unsustainable with-out raising prices. When I tell cus-tomers they could possibly cut two-thirds of their fuel bill by switching froma high speed to a low speed high torqueshredder, it surprises them. Inquirieshave increased dramatically.
I am no engine expert, but I havelearned a few things running equip-ment. Whether you are running ahigh speed or low speed unit, here aresome ideas on how to conserve fuel.Remember, a 10 percent savings willmean thousands of dollars at the endof the year.
Air Cleaner — It doesn’t get muchsimpler than this. Without enough air,your engine will never burn all the fuel
being dumped into the engine. If yousee black smoke from the exhaust, thefirst thing to check is the air cleaner.Replacing them more frequently willsave money in the long run.
Fuel system — Fuel system treat-ments and clean fuel filters keep thecorrect flow and volumes runningthrough the engine. Some fuel treat-ments are expensive, but especiallyfor older engines. Just the same,treating them will help them runmuch more efficiently. If you think re-placing some of the injectors might behelpful, have a service technicianfrom your engine manufacturer testeach injector and they will be able totell you which are operating correctlyand which need replaced.
Derate your engine — Have your en-gine manufacturer derate your engineto a lower horsepower. Each engine hasthree or four horsepower ratings, so bylowering your horsepower you can savefuel. Talk with your engine manufactur-er about the pros and cons. You willprobably not notice a loss of 50-100horsepower, but your wallet will benefitfrom the change.
Keep your services up to date —Change your oil on schedule. Clean oilkeeps an engine cooler and runningsmoothly. Especially with older enginesthat operated their fuel systems with oilpres—- Cooler fuel will burn much more
efficiently. The hotter the fuel, the moreinefficient it becomes. Keep your fuelstorage tanks covered and keep yourfuel tanks full. Today’s engines return aconsiderable amount of fuel back to thetank, which in turn heats up the fuel. Afull tank keeps fuel cooler.
Clutch/Pumps — Keeping your clutchmaintained to proper torque and changethe fluids regularly. This helps reducedrag on the engine. Eliminating unneed-ed pumps can also help. Think aboutconverting a hydraulic conveyor to elec-tric power. By eliminating a hydraulicpower source, you can save fuel costs.
New Fuel Systems — With all the newelectronics and new common rail fuel-ing systems, some Tier 4 emission en-gines are getting better fuel economythan the Tier 3 engines.

Sam Meeker of Caterpillar at WasteExpo in Las Vegas, they gave a few oth-er options:
RPM Reduction — Something as sim-ple as having the engine computer low-er a bulldozer rpm slightly when it isput into reverse can save gallons of fuelper day and not sacrifice productivity.
Tracking software — Tracking softwareon equipment has become a common op-tion. A product such as Caterpillar’s“Product Link” allows you to track manypoints of operation including idle time. Ifenabled, the software can shut off a pieceof equipment after idling a set period,thus saving fuel. All these features canbe tracked remotely as well. Check withyour equipment or engine manufacturerfor software they may offer.

For colored mulch pro-ducers whose grindingequipment has alreadybeen outfitted with a color-ing application configura-tion — manifold/spray barand related “plumbing” —the CM200 system can beattached easily, usually inless than 30 minutes. Higher torque withlower emissions

Another example ofsoftware assistance is the“Eco mode” on theKomptech Shredders.With this mode enabled,the machine monitors thetorque on the shreddershafts to determine ifthere is material in thehopper or not. If there isnot, the shredder throt-tles down to an idle whilestill turning the rotorshafts very slowly. Whenmaterial is put into thehopper, the torque on theshaft increases and themachine throttles up tofull rpm. So you don’thave to worry about youroperator going on breakor going to load a truckwith the shredder run-ning at full engine rpm.Check with your grinderor shredder manufacturerfor similar software.
On the grinder specificside of equipment opera-tion, eliminating drag onyour rotor or hammermillwill reduce engine loadand result in lower fueluse. For example, on afirst grind or when grind-ing land clearing debrisjust for reduction, a pre-cise product size is notnecessary. Try using old-er tips and largerscreens. By increasingthe distance between thetip and the screen or thetip and the anvil, you willreduce drag, which willhelp you maintain rpmand keeps you produc-tive. This example worksbest with upturn rotorsand woody materials.
For downturn rotorsand hammer mills run-ning stringy wood or palmmaterial, this would notbe a good option. In thosesituations, maintaining atight tolerance at the anviland bigger screens andgreater tip distance after-ward, works best. For afinish grind, this does notwork at all, as you willcreate more fines in yourproduct and productionrates will suffer.
Experiment a littlewhen you have the time.You may be more thanpleased with the outcome.

Fitted with high capacity axi-al piston pumps with variable flow, theworking hydraulic pressure has beenincreased from 3,771 to 4,496 psi.These improvements provide superiorcontrol of the attachments and loading,as well as higher breakout forces andfaster lift and tilt functions.
Transmissions feature the exception-al Volvo Automatic Power Shift (APS)concept, which ensures the loader al-ways operates in the ideal gear by sens-ing engine and travel speed, kick down,engine braking and other factors. Offer-ing operators a choice of four gear-shift-ing programs, APS results in more effi-cient work cycles with lower fuel con-sumption and wear. Power is deliveredto the ground through heavy duty wet
brake axles that offer high rimpull. Near the end of the 20th century, the globalcommunity was becoming increasingly aware thatthe technological advancements of the past 100 yearswere taking a toll on the environment. As a result,federal and state environmental agencies developed
regulations and laws to help protect the environmentfor future generations. For instance, the passage ofthe USEPA’s Energy Policy Act of 1992 amended theNational Energy Conservation Policy Act of 1978. Itadded water conservation and renewable energy
sources to energy efficiency requirements. During that time, it was becoming clear to Jason
Thompson that renewable energy sources were goingto become a viable in the new millennium. It was thenthat he saw this as prime opportunity to start abiomass recycling center. Thus, the creation ofAmerican Property Experts.
American Property Experts is a comprehensivevegetative debris recycling facility that annually takesin assorted yard waste (18,000 tons), wood waste(3000 tons), root mat (2500 tons) and vegetativedebris (24,000 tons). According to Thompson, thecompany has contracts with local municipalities,landscapers and homeowners from as far north asRichmond, VA to as far south as Savannah, GA. Onaverage, they receive a couple hundred dump truckloads daily.
Thompson explained, “We process all the wooddebris at our 8.5 acre facility in Wilmington, NC.Here, we annually produce 35,000 tons of boiler fuel,8500 tons of topsoil and 1500 tons of high qualitymulch. The boiler fuel is shipped to several co-gener-ation plants to make electricity. These includeInternational Paper, which produces all their ownfuel and sells the excess back to the grid, CravenCounty Electric, a county owned electric co-op,Primary Energy, a private energy production firm andGreen Power, an energy producing company that con-verted an old coal plant to biomass.”
Thompson added, “America Property Experts alsoprovide land clearing, tub grinding and soil screeningservices.”

AmericanProperty from 10Thompson purchased a Morbark 1300A Tub Grinderand a Morbark Wood Hog 5600 horizontal grinder.Because of his success with the Morbark equipment,he purchased a second 1300A in 2003.
Thompson said, “I purchased the 5600 because ithas a smaller safety zone (throw zone of debris) thana tub grinder. That allows us to work in closedsystems. We find that its production rate is slightlyslower, however.”
He emphasized that the biggest reason for hisdecision to purchase the Morbark grinders was therelationship that he had with Morbark’s area repre-sentative, Danny Westmoreland, a member of theJames River Equipment Dealership in Charlotte, NC.
“In the 10 years I have owned Morbark grinders,whenever I’ve had a question, I could call Danny,” hesaid. “If I couldn’t get him I could Michael Stanton,the Southeast U.S. regional sales manager forMorbark, Inc. The communication has been suburb.That is tremendously important since the threemachines I own are worth $600,000 or $700,000each and represent 60 percent of my total equip-ment.”
“Their demo experience was also very important tomy decision to purchase Morbark equipment,” headded. “During their demo, the 1300A productionrate was much better than that of our previousmachines. Currently, a conservative estimate of ourproduction rate for heavy LCID (Land Clearing/InertDebris) is about 45 tons per hour. ”
“The Morbark units have also proven to be finan-cially efficient,” Thompson noted. “Our jobs are ratedon efficiency per hour; in other words, what it costsus per hour to operate. That helps determine what Ibill per hour. In the first year we owned the Morbarkgrinders, we had a 35 percent increase in return oninvestment. Another cost advantage is that our main-tenance costs went from 18-20 percent of our overallcosts to 7-8 percent with the Morbark machines.Basically, the Morbark units are sturdier machinesfor heavy duty land clearing grinding operations.”
Thompson added, “The mobility of the machinesalso allows us to move off site easily. We have a dozencontracts with various landfills and private recyclersthat don’t have their own grinders. Our machines gosite to site and grind on a contract bases.”

Vermeer won theaward for its D36x50R Series II Naviga-tor® HDD, equipped with the rock fo-cused MAGnumT drilling system.
The MAGnum drilling system usesrapidly rotating magnets of alternatingpolarity within the carriage assembly,which generates a high frequency per-cussive action to fracture and effectivelybore through tough formations, includ-ing solid rock. This hammer technologywas developed in collaboration with
FlexiDRILL, a New Zealand based engi-neering company, and is licensed for ex-clusive distribution in the HDD marketby Vermeer.
Not a dedicated rock drill, the MAG-num system can be disengaged by theflip of the switch, and the D36x50R Se-ries II will perform as a conventionalHDD drill. This versatility qualifies thedrill for a range of ground conditions tohelp boost overall utilization.

When consumers head to the Virginia PeninsulasPublic Service Authority (VPPSA) Compost Facility inYorktown, VA for their composted mulch or specialtysoil products for their landscaping projects, they areassured of a consistent, quality product. That isbecause the compost has been carefully screenedwith a McCloskey 733 trommel screener before it issold to the public. In a recent visit to VPPSA, WasteHandling Equipment News had the opportunity to seethe McCloskey 733 in action while VPPSA waspreparing a stockpile of composted mulch for futuresale.
According to Donald “Donnie” Bonivich, theCompost Facility supervisor for VPPSA, all of thecomposted mulch goes through the 733 trommel asthe final step in the composting process. “When a
windrow has cured for the appropriate length of time,we screen it with the trommel,” Donnie said. “Theovers are returned to a compost windrow for furthercomposting and the screened material is eithermoved to our sales area near the entrance to thefacility, or it is stockpiled for future customer salesand direct shipment to large consumers. With thistrommel, we can screen three tractor trailer loads ofmaterial in about an hour, if we need to.”
Donnie explained that VPPSA consumers comefrom communities in Hampton, Poquoson and YorkCounties in Virginia. “VPPSA is a ten city and countysolid waste authority,” he said. “Facility membersinclude the Cities of Hampton, Poquoson andWilliamsburg and the Counties of Essex, James City,King and Queen, King William, Mathews, Middlesex
and York. The Towns of Tappahannock, Urbanna andWest Point are also members.”
As we toured the facility, Donnie said that the firststep of the process is the material is ground using atub grinder. Then, it is placed into windrows that areseveral hundred yards long, eighteen feet wide andabout seven feet tall.
Over the next six months, the windrows aremonitored as they cure. This is done to ensureconsistency. During the curing process, temperaturesin the stockpiled compost can reach 160 degrees.These products are cured for a minimum of threemonths. This curing process ensures that the materi-al is weed seed, bug and pathogen free making it safeto place around a customer’s property.

which feeds the second grind directly into theMcCloskey 733. This reduces an extra handling stepof manually feeding the reground material into thetrommel. During this screening process, theMcCloskey 733 separates the material into the twoavailable products, mulch fines and reground mulch.Once the material has rested, usually thirty days, theprocess is complete and the material is ready for sale,
For the 2012 season, VPPSA offers four productsfor sale: reground mulch, mulch fines, compost anda soil blend. Since this visit to the VPPSA facility,Donnie tells us that they have begun coloring mulchwith a newly acquired Diamond Z 1352BL tubgrinder, and they will be offering colored mulch aspart of their product line. This product was offeredseveral years ago, but with the economy people wereleaning toward the lower prices offered on regularmulch. With renewed interest, they will be offering itagain.

the crew at the VirginiaPeninsulas Public Service Author-ity (VPPSA) enjoyed having theMcCloskey International 733 highperformance trommel goingthrough its paces on a recentafternoon at the Yorktown, VACompost Facility. The 733, withits 7-foot diameter trommelscreen and 225 hp CAT dieselengine, gives VPPSA the ability toscreen up to 400-cubic-yards ofdry, composted mulch per hour asthey prepare for the 2012 yardcare and landscaping season.With a virtual endless line ofcustomers awaiting a load offreshly screened, compostedmulch, Donnie Bonivich needsthe assurance that the 733’sreliability provides when it comesto having product ready for hiscustomers.
David Bleeks, the Common-wealth Equipment representativewho works with VPPSA to keepthe 733 serviced and ready to go,said that the volume of productthat the high performancetrommel is able to process, givesrecyclers the kind of equipmentthat they need to meet the highvolume demands of the busyspring landscaping time of year.He noted that the trommel’s48-inch wide remote controlledradial stacker, gives the operatorthe ability to stockpile up to1,200-cubic-yards of materialfrom a single operating location.With the 180 degree rotatingstacker, the need to move thetrommel to additional locations isreduced, giving the crew moreoperating time in one spot.
Additionally, with its 33-footlong drum, material is able tospend more time on the screen,
which allows for a more thoroughscreening of the finished product.One of the nice features thatBonivich appreciates in theproduction capabilities of the 733is that he is able to screen aboutthree tractor trailer loads ofmulch in an hour if and when heneeds to. He says that this kind ofcapability is especially helpfulduring the spring and summerwhen wholesale customers aredoing everything they can to keeptheir composted mulch inadequate supply.

Reduced weight andbetter performance
means that similar re-sults can be achievedwith a smaller hydraulicbreaker. A lighter break-er also means that asmaller excavator can beused, saving both invest-ment and operatingcosts. According to Beck-er, “The return on invest-ment is many timesgreater than the pure ac-quisition costs. The re-duction of total cost of
ownership conserves re-sources such as manhours and fuel. The HB4100 does this with itsdurability and simplemaintenance concepts.”
Another improvementto the HB 4100 hydraulicbreaker is a guide systemthat makes the breakermore stable and resilient.“Hydraulic breakers areultimately subjected touse under the most ex-
