How does the organization of the Periodic Table reflect the atomic structure and properties of the elements?

Reviewed process for essay completion next week.

TLW identify physical properties and changes by completing a note sheet, identifying physical properties in a station activity, then completing an exit ticket.

8.P.1 Understand the physical properties of matter and changes that occur when matter interacts in an open or closed container8.P.1.3 Compare physical changes such as size, shape and change of state to chemical changes that are a result of a chemical reaction to include changes in temperature, color, gas or formation of a precipitate.

PHYSICAL

PROPERTY

Any characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. Every substance has its own set of physical properties.

Physical PropertiesUsed to observe and

describe matter or elements.

Can be observed or measured without changing the structure of the substance.

Use your 5 Senses… appearance, texture,

color, odor

Scientific Examples…

melting point, boiling point, density, solubility, malleability

LUSTER How material reflects light. “Shiny-ness”

DENSITY Mass/volumeg/cm3

How compact matter is

SOLUBILITY

A measure of how much of a substance dissolves in a given amount of another substance.

BOILING POINT

The temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas.

MELTING POINT

The temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid.

SPECIFIC HEAT

The amount of heat or energy needed to raise 1 gram of a substance by 1 degree Celsius (1C).

MAGNETISM

The ability to respond to charged iron ore

MALLEABILITY

The ability to be hammered, shaped, or rolled into thin sheets. Most metals are malleable.

DUCTILITY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkuDM3hYutI

The ability to be pulled into wire. Most metals are ductile.

CONDUCTIVTYElectrical ConductivityThe ability of a material or

substance that allows electrons to flow through it easily.

Thermal ConductivityThe ability to transfer heat

Most metals are good conductors of electricity.

State of matterSolid, liquid or gas

Physical ChangeA physical change

takes place without the element’s chemical structure changing.

Physical Changes are:DissolvingPhase change (solid, liquid, gas)

Changing shape

What is the difference between melting and dissolving?Melting: ONE substance

Involves a change of state (energy change)

Dissolving: TWO or more substancescreates a solution or mixtureparticles evenly distributed, they are

attracted to particles of the other materials, but don’t bond with them. Ex: salt water
