Fighting Rages Beyond Europe

•Battle on the Gallipoli Peninsula

Turks vs. British, French, Australian

•British helped Arab nations rise Up against the Turks

•In parts of Asia and Africa, German land came under assault

- Japanese overran the Germans in China

-French and British fought Germans in Africa

•People from every continent were involved in the war

What did the colonies of the countries involved in WWI provide

for aid. Do you think this was a good idea? Why or Why not?

•The U.S enters the war (1917)

In 1917 Germans announce a naval blockade around Britain

*Unrestricted submarine warfare- German submarines would sink without warning any ship in the waters around Britain

•May 7, 1915, German U-boat attacked a passenger ship, killing 128 Americans

Americans were outraged and warned the Germans

Germans would sink 2 more American passenger ships

Feb- 1917, U. S. intercepts a note fromThe Germans to Mexico. Allies?

When the note was made public, Americans wanted to go to war

April 2, 1917- U.S declares war on Germany

By the time the United States joined the allies, the war had been going on for 3 years

In those 3 years, all of Europe had been changed (death, political, economic, life)

Americans brought new enthusiasm to the allied troops.

•1918- Russia withdraws from war

•Germans could concentrate on 1 front

However, with the arrival of more than 2 million Americans the Germans were slowly pushed back

Americans- eager, excited, ‘fresh’

How does American involvement change the outcome of WWI. Do you believe the outcome of WWI

would have been different if the U.S. did not get involved?

World War I soon became a total War

Total War- entire force of gov. devoted to winning the war

Gov. told factories what to produce

What is Total War?

Goods were short supply

Rationing- from butter to shoe leather, people were only allowed To buy so much

Gov. also used propaganda- one sided information to keep up support for the war

What is rationing? What is Propaganda? How do they play a

role in the outcome of WWI?

The Central Powers began to Crumble

Bulgaria then the Turks

Oct 1918- Austria-Hungary falls due to a revolution at home

11 hour of the 11 day, in the 11th

month the Armistice was signed

Leaders of the victorious nations met in Paris to work out a Peace agreement

When did WWI end and what is the Armistice?

Now that you have seen propaganda posters, how did they influence peoples opinion and decisions

through out WWI?
