+PROJECT+OVERVIEW:++!! Vortex!induced!vibration!as!means!of!energy!collection!in!water!has!several!advantages!over!
other!water! energy! collection! systems.! The! design! is! a! simple!mass,! spring,! damper! system! (see!
Figure!1)!with!the!damper!being!the!energy!takeoff!device.!More!specifically,!the!damper!is!a!linear!
generator.!The!simplistic!design!allows!for!a!modular!system—the!bluff!body!(mass)!used!to!cause!
vortices! to!shed!and! induce!vibrations!could!be!exchanged!with!a!different!geometry! to!optimize!
vibrations! and! the! spring! and! the! damper! could! be! scaled! accordingly! to! maximize! energy!
collection.!The!modularity!of!the!system!also!allows!the!system!to!be!portable!for!the!end!user.!The!
small!size!of!this!system!is!an!advantage!towards!the!aquatic!life;!the!goal!is!to!keep!the!ecosystem!
intact.! Overall,! the! system! should! be! able! to! be! scaled! for! multiple! river! velocities,! multiple!
locations,!and!be!modular.!

A!full[sized!prototype!should!be!built!to!perform!theoretical!and!experimental!analysis.!The!
theoretical! analysis! should! be!modeled! so! that!multiple! river! velocities,! river! temperatures,! and!
system!parameters!can!be!analyzed!and!compared!to!experimental!results.!Because!a!river!with!the!
target! flow!velocity!may!not!be!available,!experimental! testing!may!have! to!be!done!using!a! flow!
table.!This!is!crucial!to!avoid!damage!from!debris!in!water!and!freezing!temperatures!in!the!winter.!
Legal!permission!and!access!to!an!ideal!river!may!also!be!difficult!to!obtain.!Initial!testing!should!be!
done!in!a!flow!table,!but!eventually!the!system!should!be!tested!outdoors,!in!a!“real[life”!situation.!

The!goal!of!this!project!is!to!build!a!vortex!induced!vibration!energy!collector!prototype!that!
can! be! placed! in! a! flow! tank,! river! or! stream.! The! system! should! only! oscillate! vertically!
(constrained!along! the!y[axis),!and!be!optimized!so! the!system!doesn’t!vibrate!out!of!control!and!
the! amount! of! energy! collected! is! maximized.! The! system! should! also! interface! with! the! MSD!
P12402!Battery!Bank.!The!experimental!results!from!a!flow!tank!or!stream!will!be!compared!to!the!
theoretical! results! obtained! through! simulation.! This! system! model! should! be! analyzed! using!
MATLAB!and!Simulink.!
