Small nano fillers make a big difference!
Grandio’s Nano Technology leads to enormous clinical benefits
Conventional filler technology creates its particles by
grinding down large pieces of glass ceramic into fine
powders. The lower limit of particles obtainable by
grinding is approx. 0.5 µm or 500 nm. In a conventional
composite, the space between these particles is filled
with resin. Thus, a typical universal restorative has a
filler degree of around 77% w/w. Since polymerization
shrinkage only occurs in the resin matrix, a higher
filler degree would reduce shrinkage. Yet, higher filler
degrees make the materials more difficult to handle
and may lead to enclosures of air bubbles when
applying them in the depth of a cavity.
A material that promises a smooth consistency for
easy handling, adaptation and modeling, plus low
shrinkage values, seems to have been a very elusive
item.
Recently, restoratives using nano technology have
been introduced. The nano particles used in grandio
are silicon dioxide filler particles grown from a liquid
in a sol-gel process to a size of 20 to 60 nm. The
surfaces of these particles are then functionalized
to provide cross-linking capabilities. These nano
particles have the following amazing properties:
• they are not visible to the human eye
• they behave rather like liquids
• they can cross-link after surface modification
• they offer incredibly large surfaces
Currently, nano technology is used in different approa-
ches: e.g. one manufacturer uses nano particles
and nano clusters to produce a restorative aimed at
anterior restorations; an other approach is to combine
nano particles with traditional glass ceramic filler
particles to obtain a high-performance universal
restorative. Here, the traditional fillers form a hard
net work and the nano particles fill the spaces bet-
ween them. This maximizes the packing density and
leaves less resin within the filler/resin matrix. VOCO
has chosen the latter approach for its universal
nano-hybrid composite grandio.
The ratio of resin to fillers determines the physical
properties of the restorative. grandio combines nano
scaled particles with conventional sized glass ceramic
fillers of a select size range. The result: an extremely
high filler loading of 87% by weight, (71.4% by vol)
with an extremely low resin content. This successful
combination leads to grandio’s outstanding physical
properties. grandio out performs the strength of a
hybrid and sets a new standard in surface hardness,
wear and fracture resistance.
Single Shade Simplicity via enhanced translucency
A nano particle is so small that it cannot be seen with
the naked eye. In fact, it is so small that a nano
particle can pass through a beam of visible light
without causing it to diffract. This perfect translu-
cency affords excellent esthetic properties for the
clinician. grandio has a very high degree of trans-
lucency, allowing the clinician to achieve natural,
vital esthetics using only ONE shade! The Shade
Simplicity concept results in fewer shades to store
for the clinician without any esthetic compromise
for the patients.
VOCO has chosen a “Single Shade Simplicity” ap-
proach when it comes to the available shade range.
In general, most clinicians actually solve all their
esthetic cases with 6 to 8 shades grandio offers a
practical choice of 16 shades in either syringes or
Caps. The shade range offers 14 translucent inclu-
ding bleach, incisial shade and 2 opaque shades.
High polish and color retention
Due to small nano fillers, grandio has the high gloss
polishability of a micro filled composite, but without
the physical compromises. grandio’s 30-50% less
resin content compared to micro hybrids gives the
material long term polish and color retention.
Resin is used for all composite manufacturing. Re-
sin is also the primary cause for such concerns as:
polymerization shrinkage, extrinsic staining and free
radicals/ residual monomers. grandio reduces these
problems to a nominal level. The 87% filler content
of grandio results in a nominal resin content of 13%.
This is 30–50% less resin than most micro-hybrids.
grandio has only 1.57% shrinkage, less staining and
a much higher level of biocompatibility.
When hearing about Grandio’s filler degree of 87% w/w,
almost every general practitioner expects to find an
extremely hard material of amalgam-like consistency.
Due to the liquid-like behavior of the nano particles,
however, Grandio is smoother than most conventional
micro-hybrids without slumping. Grandio will not stick
to instruments, thereby avoiding a “pull-back effect.”
Even extruding caps/compules do not require the force
one might expect. Modelling and shaping are easy with
any composite instrument. Polishing and grinding re -
veals the extreme hardness of the material to the dentist
and is best done with diamond-based burs and polishers.
The short light-curing time of 20 seconds with a
standard halogen curing unit saves time. grandio is
also suitable for LED lights. Moreover, grandio is
compatible with all conventional bonding agents.

wear and fracture resistance.
Single Shade Simplicity via enhanced translucency
A nano particle is so small that it cannot be seen with
the naked eye. In fact, it is so small that a nano
particle can pass through a beam of visible light
without causing it to diffract. This perfect translu-
cency affords excellent esthetic properties for the
clinician. grandio has a very high degree of trans-
lucency, allowing the clinician to achieve natural,
vital esthetics using only ONE shade! The Shade
Simplicity concept results in fewer shades to store
for the clinician without any esthetic compromise
for the patients.
VOCO has chosen a “Single Shade Simplicity” ap-
proach when it comes to the available shade range.
In general, most clinicians actually solve all their
esthetic cases with 6 to 8 shades grandio offers a
practical choice of 16 shades in either syringes or
Caps. The shade range offers 14 translucent inclu-
ding bleach, incisial shade and 2 opaque shades.
High polish and color retention
Due to small nano fillers, grandio has the high gloss
polishability of a micro filled composite, but without
the physical compromises. grandio’s 30-50% less
resin content compared to micro hybrids gives the
material long term polish and color retention.
Resin is used for all composite manufacturing. Re-
sin is also the primary cause for such concerns as:
polymerization shrinkage, extrinsic staining and free
radicals/ residual monomers. grandio reduces these
problems to a nominal level. The 87% filler content
of grandio results in a nominal resin content of 13%.
This is 30–50% less resin than most micro-hybrids.
grandio has only 1.57% shrinkage, less staining and
a much higher level of biocompatibility.
When hearing about Grandio’s filler degree of 87% w/w,
almost every general practitioner expects to find an
extremely hard material of amalgam-like consistency.
Due to the liquid-like behavior of the nano particles,
however, Grandio is smoother than most conventional
micro-hybrids without slumping. Grandio will not stick
to instruments, thereby avoiding a “pull-back effect.”
Even extruding caps/compules do not require the force
one might expect. Modelling and shaping are easy with
any composite instrument. Polishing and grinding re -
veals the extreme hardness of the material to the dentist
and is best done with diamond-based burs and polishers.
The short light-curing time of 20 seconds with a
standard halogen curing unit saves time. grandio is
also suitable for LED lights. Moreover, grandio is
compatible with all conventional bonding agents.

Small nano fillers make a big difference!
Grandio’s Nano Technology leads to enormous clinical benefits
Conventional filler technology creates its particles by
grinding down large pieces of glass ceramic into fine
powders. The lower limit of particles obtainable by
grinding is approx. 0.5 µm or 500 nm. In a conventional
composite, the space between these particles is filled
with resin. Thus, a typical universal restorative has a
filler degree of around 77% w/w. Since polymerization
shrinkage only occurs in the resin matrix, a higher
filler degree would reduce shrinkage. Yet, higher filler
degrees make the materials more difficult to handle
and may lead to enclosures of air bubbles when
applying them in the depth of a cavity.
A material that promises a smooth consistency for
easy handling, adaptation and modeling, plus low
shrinkage values, seems to have been a very elusive
item.
Recently, restoratives using nano technology have
been introduced. The nano particles used in grandio
are silicon dioxide filler particles grown from a liquid
in a sol-gel process to a size of 20 to 60 nm. The
surfaces of these particles are then functionalized
to provide cross-linking capabilities. These nano
particles have the following amazing properties:
• they are not visible to the human eye
• they behave rather like liquids
• they can cross-link after surface modification
• they offer incredibly large surfaces
Currently, nano technology is used in different approa-
ches: e.g. one manufacturer uses nano particles
and nano clusters to produce a restorative aimed at
anterior restorations; an other approach is to combine
nano particles with traditional glass ceramic filler
particles to obtain a high-performance universal
restorative. Here, the traditional fillers form a hard
net work and the nano particles fill the spaces bet-
ween them. This maximizes the packing density and
leaves less resin within the filler/resin matrix. VOCO
has chosen the latter approach for its universal
nano-hybrid composite grandio.
The ratio of resin to fillers determines the physical
properties of the restorative. grandio combines nano
scaled particles with conventional sized glass ceramic
fillers of a select size range. The result: an extremely
high filler loading of 87% by weight, (71.4% by vol)
with an extremely low resin content. This successful
combination leads to grandio’s outstanding physical
properties. grandio out performs the strength of a
hybrid and sets a new standard in surface hardness,
wear and fracture resistance.
