X was reportedly based, at least in part, on John Nettleship, who taught the author chemistry and employed the author’s mother as an assistant at Wyedean School near Chepstow. For X's surname, the author borrowed the name of the village of X, Suffolk. In a 1999 interview and again in 2004, the author singled out X as one of the author’s favourite characters to write.
