THE TEMPEST

Victoria Barnard

A piece of surrealist art, representing a habitat on a remote island. A single nude woman connotes the naivety or Miranda

Another surrealist painting, with the exclusion of the elephant, the place seems an island of mystery and magic – where anything could happen

This is a Ariel view of an island, the way the water curves around it reminded me of electricity and power

This drawing suggests and island that is half nature and half man made, the blue represents some sort of infrastructure

A poster from forbidden planet, which had a great influence on my design, the scenery is still sparse with connotations of an island

This represents the idea that man made technology is invented to aid and be controlled by us

I found this piece a while ago, the sand floor gives the image that earthy foundation, whereas other components are more futuristic and man made

A photo from a production featuring the characters Ariel and Caliban. I like the way their pigments contradict. Caliban’s skin colour suggests the rustic way he lives, whereas Ariel looks more like the elements or water and spirit

An image of Prospero from a production of the tempest, his attire conforms to normal representations. However, the circle around him is made completely of light – conforming to my representation of technologies importance in this world

I like this idea for a type of setting, the way the items look like they have washed up from the sea, and have taken their rightful place to create an island of mystery with futuristic undertones.

This is how I imagine my “Tempest” to look, and exciting array of lasers and lighting effects – made by and controlled by man
