Zaballero, sung by his daugh-ters Rya Patricia and Rachel Pauline for all Filipino fami-lies. VIDES Philippines be-lieves that this audio CD is a powerful tool that can shape one’s values and options, espe-cially in applying positive discipline in parenting. It is their way of celebrating the 20th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of Children in 2009, the 17th National Children’s Month and also the 25th anniversary of establishment of the Philippine Province of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (also known as the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco). This audio CD is donated by the Zaballero Family to VIDES Philippines and in turn, shares it with the Child Rights Network. The VIDES Busina Mo, Dunong Ko kids performed their inter-pretation of the song before the assembly.

VIDES reaches out to flood victims at NIA Road
P A G E 3 S P E C I A L I S S U E
Every Tuesday, the VIDES volunteers conduct their Busina Mo, Dunong Ko mobile education project along NIA Road in Quezon City.
When typhoon Ondoy (“Ketsana”) struck Manila last Sat-urday, September 26, the VIDES volunteers saw the news on TV about a concrete wall along NIA Road which collapsed and killed three people.
Immediately a group was organ-ized to bring some relief goods to the victims.
Arriving at the site on Saturday, October 3, the VIDES volunteers and representatives from the Don Bosco School (Manila) Educating Community distributed rice, canned goods, and other food supplies to the survivors.
Some of the victims even showed to the volunteers the wounds they suffered during the typhoon. But still, they are all grateful to God because they were
saved and are still alive. Homeless they may be, but they are not hope-less. Mothers and children repeat their stories… “the flood waters were so great! They enveloped us! We went up on our roofs! We had to run and swim, jump, hold on tight, just to save our lives… We lost our things.. our beds.. our uten-sils… our clothes… our loved ones..but at least we are still alive, thanks be to God!” One mother told the volunteers: “At 10:00 AM last Saturday, I went to see my daughter-in-law at the hospital. She just gave birth. When I returned at 10:45, my son was already dead,
crushed by the concrete wall… and with him also, my three-year-old granddaughter.”
The delegation of volunteers spent some more time listening to the children, mothers and fathers. They prayed at the makeshift tent where the three coffins were laid and where the family was temporar-ily lodged after having been dis-placed by the floods. Beside the coffins were two folding beds, were shirtless children were sleeping. Beside one of the beds, a pot placed on top of three big stones with a lighted fire was boiling. The tent was filled with holes that even as the volunteers were praying before the dead bodies, the rainwater con-tinued to drip here and there, drenching them.
It was a heart-rending experi-ence… and the best that we could give is our time and our very selves.. Nothing beats being one with them and one for others.
thanking God all the time for letting them survive. Many of the families lost their clothes, utensils, and home appliances. A one-month old baby died when her cradle was soaked in the flood. The group condoled with the family and spent some moments in prayer at the wake. Mrs. Ebacitas, wife of Barangay Chairman Reynaldo Ebacitas of Bgy 143, thanked the group of vol-unteers for being one with them in their moments of suffering. Her husband got sick on account of the strenuous evacuation measures they did at the barangay hall. After the home visitation, the three vehicles loaded with relief goods headed towards the San Roque Parish where they had a prayer service led by Sr. Maria Josefina Carrasco, FMA and the VIDES Volunteers. The parish
At 2:00 PM of Saturday, Octo-ber 3, the VIDES Volunteers led the group representing the members of the Educating Community of Don Bosco School (Salesian Sisters) and the FMA Philippine Province in reaching out to the victims of ty-phoon Ondoy (“Ketsana”) at Bgy. 143, Riverside, Gamban, Pasay City. Most of the 600 recipient-families have children attending the regular Saturday VIDES Busina Mo, Dunong Ko mobile education project. Prior to the distribution of relief goods, the delegation visited the families in their flooded shanties. Interviews with mothers, fathers, children and the elderly revealed that the floodwaters coming from the creek reached about 8 feet deep, submerging their homes in murky waters. In spite of their tragedy, the people could still manage to smile,
priest, Rev. Fr. Joselino Tuazon gave his blessing and encouraged the people to pray always. He also reminded them about their responsi-bility toward the environment, par-ticularly about proper waste dis-posal. He thanked the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco and the VIDES volunteers for this concrete act of solidarity for his parishioners who have suffered from typhoon Ondoy. The people expressed their appreciation and gratitude to all those who have contrib-uted their re-sources.
