What do you think of when see a poppy flower? For some, the poppy conjures up images of Dorothy falling asleep in a poppy field on her way to see the Wizard. Others equate the poppy with its medicinal properties. Still others are reminded of the small red bloom’s role in mythology. To many, if not most, Americans the poppy is a reminder of our fallen veterans.
The Buddy Poppy, a small red flower symbolic of the blood shed in World War I by millions of Allied soldiers in defense of freedom, was originally sold to provide relief for the people of war-devastated France.
The VFW conducted its first poppy distribution before Memorial Day in 1922, becoming the first veterans' organization to organize a nationwide distribution. The poppy soon was adopted as the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. During the 1923 encampment the VFW decided that VFW "Buddy"® Poppies would be assembled by disabled and needy veterans who would be paid for their work to provide them with financial assistance. The next year, disabled veterans at the Buddy Poppy factory in Pittsburgh assembled VFW Buddy Poppies. The designation "Buddy Poppy" was adopted at that time.
In February 1924, the VFW registered the name Buddy Poppy with the U.S. Patent Office. A certificate was issued on May 20, 1924, granting the VFW all trademark rights in the name of Buddy under the classification of artificial flowers. The VFW has made

Chaplain’s Corner Thought for the day!
Anger is never without a reason, but seldom with a good one
Fortunately, we have lost no members since our last newsletter, but continue to pray for those who have lost loved ones. May they continue to see a brighter day with fondest memories in their hearts. Pray for our service men and women who continue to fight across the world for our freedom here in the U.S. May they come home safely and soon to loved ones here waiting. Continue to pray for our Country and the leadership and decisions that are made daily for they affect us all.
Prayers for our Post Officers as they continue to try to make this a better Post for our veterans and families to come to. Reach out and give them the support and help they may need. This Post is here for all of us to enjoy and be proud of. If you know of anyone who is in the hospital or rehab, or has passed on to their heavenly home please let me know by calling the canteen at (407) 296-2502 or me personally at (407) 629-5808. Respectfully,
Sam Ramsey VFW Post 2093 Chaplain A Proud Lifetime Member
It has been a good first month as your Commander. I am working toward some small goals right now in the Canteen and other areas. Some of you may have already noticed that we have a new Bowling machine in the game room. This machine seems to already be a hit with the personnel, myself included, that have been playing.
I would like to welcome Shirley Colburn to the VFW crew. Shirley is now running the kitchen and cooking some savory dishes.
With all the good things that are happening unfortunately, there is
some bad too. I am very sorry to announce that July was the last month Larry McCalley will be holding the office of Quartermaster.
Larry is starting back up his catering and lawn irrigation businesses and will need to devote all his time to these businesses. Let’s all wish Larry good luck in his endeavors. In our meeting July 21st, we voted for Glenn Jackson and Lee Wozniak to share the office until we can get someone else to take the position full time.

From the Ladies Auxiliary President’s Desk Greetings! On behalf of the Ladies Auxiliary, I’m pleased to report that the July 4th celebration was a huge success. Thank you to all who provided side dishes for the cookout and helped throughout the day with other activities. Our fireworks
display was awesome. Thanks to Bob Yingst, Michael Yingst and Joe Brogan. A great job.
Bingo on Saturdays is also going very well. If you haven’t had the opportunity to volunteer to make this event happen each week, come and see me. We could use help with calling and selling cards.
On August 1st we will be going to the VA Hospital for a day of playing Bingo and an ice cream social. Please see Susie Schiebel to join us. We’ll be leaving the Post around 12:15 p.m. Come with us and you will be glad you did. It's a heartwarming experience to share memories with our veterans.
On Friday August 7th we will be hosting our annual Purple Heart Luncheon. Thank you Rei for hosting this event in the past. I know you will be back when your health is better. For this year’s event Shirley Coburn and Sharon Mabie will be hosting the luncheon. To joint us for lunch, call the Canteen at (407) 296-2502. The bartenders can take your reservation.
Friday, August 7th and Saturday, August 8th is School of Instruction which is being held at Florida Hotel & Conference Center at the Florida Mall. I will be going on Saturday so if anyone wants to go with me, let me know.
Our District Meeting is Sunday August 16th, beginning at 11:00 a.m. with a joint meeting. It will be held at Post 4305 in Winter Garden, the home Post of our very own District President, Cecilia. I hope to see all of our Ladies Auxiliary members there to glean all of the useful information that will be given.
If anyone has some shelving that they could donate for the closet in the Ladies Auxiliary room, we are in need. We must get some things off of the floor to avoid periodic water seepage. If you can help, let me or Nancy Johnson know.
That’s it for this month. Thank you for all the help each of you give to me in making the job of being the Ladies Auxiliary President a pleasure.
Wishing each of you happiness and good health.
Respectfully Submitted,
Jani Ramsey

Update on Post 4287
As reported last month, Post 4287 was recovering from a small fire that occurred in June. After almost a month of being closed, we’re pleased to let you know that the Post reopened on July 18th. Their Bingo hall is still in need of repairs, but the canteen is open and it looks like they’re back in
that trademark a guarantee that all poppies bearing that name and the VFW label are genuine products of the work of disabled and needy veterans. No other organization, firm or individual can legally use the name Buddy Poppy. Today, VFW Buddy Poppies are still assembled by disabled and needy veterans in VA Hospitals. The VFW Buddy Poppy program provides compensation to the veterans who assemble the poppies, provides financial assistance in maintaining state and national veterans' rehabilitation and service programs and partially supports the VFW National Home For Children.
POPPIES Con’t VFW Post 2093’s
Service Officer
Your awareness and support of the Veterans Service Officer (VSO) helps thousands of Florida’s veterans, many with physical and psychological wounds of war, to receive assistance. The VSO helps veterans rebuild their lives and families and rejoin society as proud, productive citizens. Public support and political understand-ing is necessary because the VSO unravels the federal red tape on behalf of veterans. Citizens must help the men and women we sent off to war.
Many Americans do not understand that the U.S. government has not always been able to assist the veteran. This was frequently the case. For more than 50 years, the VFW/VSO has been the sig-nificant advocate representative to veterans in their quest to se-cure entitlement for which they are qualified. Still, many veterans and dependents/survivors of veterans are not aware of this value resource.
