right hand side of the screen is a writing area for explanations in either English or the student’s first language to facilitate a clear understanding of
the meaning of the verb.
Activity suggestions
Use this page any way you like.
This is a demonstrating page to focus students' attention on any verb you want. By writing in the writing space you could use it to
introduce a particular verb or to demonstrate sentence construction. Use the top arrows to change the letters and the bottom arrows
to find all the verbs that begin with that letter.

Write a sentence
The verb and verb form are displayed along with the illustration of your
choice of verb.
Activity Suggestions
• Divide the class into four teams and ask each team to think of four sentences using the target verb form. After they have
done this have a feedback discussion and then ask one member from each team to come up to the board to write up
their sentence. • Use this as a demonstration model when introducing a verb
form to give examples of sentence construction using the target verb form.
• Write four different sentences in the square, with the verb form missing and ask the students to choose which verb form should be
used from the central bank to complete the sentence.

Talk about…
In this speaking exercise, students focus on why different verb
forms are used. It can also be used for presentation and/or revision discussions.
The Verb Selector displays whatever verb you choose and the six
grammar tabs enable the class to focus on the grammar area you want them to work in.
Choose one of the following grammar tabs-
Tab 1 - Present simple/continuous Tab 2 - Past continuous
Tab 3 - Past simple Tab 4 - Future
Tab 5 - Conditional
Tab 6 - Present Perfect
Activity suggestions • Select a verb using the Verb selector and then choose a
grammar tab you would like the class to focus on.
Click on the Random Selector icon to randomly select a prompt and then ask the students to use the verb in the
correct tense in the prompt context.

e.g. Verb selector - arrest, Verb table grammar tab - Present
Simple/Continuous - happening now 'He's arresting the man with the red sweater.'
• Choose a verb and a grammar tab, write up a sentence in the
text box and then ask the students to decide which of the prompts matches the sentence.
• Use the prompts to teach, review or remind students of
sentence structures. Negotiate sentence structure and write sample sentences in the box at the top.

Say it!
In the activity the teacher and students use the verb form from the
box to create sentences. This activity can be used as a game to practice discussion and/or writing skills either as a whole class or in
individual groups.
Activity suggestions
• Use the Random Selector icon to produce prompts and ask the students to call out sentences.
• This activity could also be used as a revision game. Divide the students into pairs, pairing up weaker students with stronger
ones, and then set the clock tool to whatever time you think is
suitable. Hit the Change button and then ask the learners to construct as many sentences as they can, using the verb
form, in the time you give them. You or the students could write up some of their answers in the boxes to display them
and discuss them with the rest of the class. • For weaker students write a sentence up on the board with
either the verbs form or the pronoun missing. Then hit the change button and decide which form completes the sentence.
Discuss why some of them work and some of them don't. e.g. I will build my own house.

Verb race
All the words in the boxes are used to encourage students to say
something from one of the following Grammar key tense categories.
Grammar Key 1. Present simple 2. Present continuous
3. Past simple 4. Past continuous 5. Future 6. Conditional
7. Present perfect
Activity suggestions
Divide the class into two teams the blue team and the
range team. This activity is best done with the whole class as the pace needs to be quick. Ask the first team to pick a
number and then produce a phrase or sentence using the correct grammar (see above). The other team judges whether
the sentence is correct. If it is correct click on either the blue or the orange hexagon to mark the main hexagon.
The winning team is the one to make a straight line.

About you!!!
This activity is to give the students speaking practice using the
target language. Use the writing space for the students or to write up a sentence.
• The students take it in turns to tell the other students
something about themselves using both the target language and the form of the grammar you want them to work on. The
class then vote individually on whether they think the information the student has given is true or false.
• Play the game in the same way as above, but divide the class
into groups. The teams can ask questions to try to discover
more information from the student making the statement. The student can only reply 'Yes' or 'No' to the class. Assign one
voting device to each group and use the space at the bottom of the board to write up the scores. This enables the groups to
discuss between themselves and gives more speaking practice to the student making the statement.
• Give the students some sentences about yourself or a general
knowledge quiz using the target language. You could and

write them up on the board if necessary. Then ask the
students to guess whether they're 'True' or 'False'.

© 2008 Promethean Ltd Verbots Illustrated Verbs 20
Find the reason
This activity focuses on reading and negotiating the reason for using
one of the tenses in the target language.
The choices A to F encourage the students to match a sentence to the reasons why you would use it.
If you don't have Activote ask for a show of hands.
Activity suggestions
• Write a sentence using one of the tenses in the target language. Use Learner response systems (Voting) and ask the
students to vote on which of the reasons matches the
sentences. • You can ask pairs of advanced students to prepare their own
sentences. They can take it in turns to write up or read their sentences and then ask the other students to vote for the
correct meaning.
