Scoring the schools
Utah’s schools have two accountability systems that give differing weight to improvement. In theend, though, most schools landed in the same general ranking on each list. Seven of the top 10and eight of the bottom 10 elementary and junior high schools on the Utah ComprehensiveAccountability (UCAS) system (scores released Monday) were also in the top and bottom 10 onSchool Grades (scores released Sept. 3). The same high schools ranked in the top five under bothsystems, though in a different order. The bottom 10 lists of high schools differ markedly. Alterna-tive schools serving at-risk students dominate the School Grades bottom 10 list. UCAS uses a
different formula for most alternative schools. Those point scores are expected out next week.
