and colleagues.– considerations for WIKI security.– who to contact at BCPS for more training.– And be able to brainstorm and share ideas about

WIKIS.

What is a WIKI?

A WIKI is essentially SAAS -software as a service.

WIKI software allows users to create and edit content on a web page using any web browser.

How to Create a WIKI

Create an account at www.pbworks.com Take advantage of their tutorials to create

your WIKI.

Using WIKIS in the Classroom

Add a variety of types of pages to your WIKI to engage students in a variety of creative activities.

Types of pages / activities I have used include BLOG, COMMENT, TEST REVIEW.

Upload useful documentas, such as PowerPoints, handouts, etc.

IDEAS?

Using WIKIS With Your Colleagues

A collaborative WIKI can be used by departments or small instructional groups, to keep in touch or plan collaboratively.

Use the tips sent by PBWORKS!

SECURITY

Set up your WIKI security settings so that only invited users may view the WIKI. This protects student privacy.

Set pages so that students may only edit in the manner you wish. The BASIC membership only allows comprehensive settings for the entire WIKI, so choose “read only” in this case.

Teach your students your expectations for commenting on the WIKI.

Use email notifications to monitor student comments. Delete those that are inappropriate.

Getting Training from BCPS

Office of Instructional Technology public site– http://www.bcps.org/offices/oit/– Contact the OIT to inquire about training in using

WIKIS in the classroom, in order to have access to the enhanced pbworks.com software.

BRAINSTORM!

Brainstorm a list of 5-10 ways you could use WIKIS with your students or your colleagues.

Share your list with your neighbors. Share your favorite idea with the entire

group.
