Severallargepublicannouncementtowerssuchasthoseusedbyauthoritarianregimespunctuatethesetdesign.Heavilyweightedbaseandladderrungsallowthemtobeclimbedduringthefinal‘uprising,’andflashingbeaconlightsontopmakethemnaturalfocalpointsforfeatures.Plansandbuild/leaseoptionsavailablethroughTigerProps.
Acrossthefrontsideline,an‘electricfence’closesintheensembleandemphasizestheiroppression.Wiresmadeofdarkcoloredropearepulledtaughtbytheweighteduprightsandladderrungsonthebackallowforadramaticfinalsceneinourshow.Plansandbuild/leaseoptionsavailablethroughTigerProps.

#Uprisingdevelopsitsownvisualiconographythroughcolorandsymbolism.Thearrowgivesadynamicsenseofmotion,theredconnectsourrebelliontorevolutionarymovementsofthepast,andthelimemarksitasafullymodernphenomenonatthesametime.

AsthePreshowbeginsinthepit,prerecordednarrationsetsthemoodthroughominousannouncementsfromthePAsystemspoutingtotalitarianslogans:‘CooperateandObey…Dissentistreason,conformityissecurity…Thereisnothingtofearifyouhavenothingtohide…’

Aftersettinguptheprops,themusicianssitonthegroundaroundthestageinvariousangryposeswhiletheguardpaces,hoodsandmasksup,lookingangrilyatthecrowdthroughthefence.Finally,themusiciansrisetotheirfeet,fistintheair.
OpenerEffects—BasedonApocalypsePlease
Afterthepoundingpianomotifislaiddownbythepit,themelodyisintroducedbyasoloist[sketchedhereasamellophone,thesoloistcouldbeadjustedtosuityourstrengthsandneeds].Asingleguardmemberstalksangrilythroughthecrowdandbeginstospinasthesoloistbegins.Meanwhile,therestoftheensemblepunchestheskyintimewiththepianomotif.
Asthemelodiclineistakenupbytherestofthelowbrass,theguardsoloistmovesacrossthefield,beingjoinedontheflagphrasebyotherguardmembers—allsymbolizingthespreadoftherebellion.
Justbeforethefirstarrivalpoint,aftertheentireensemblehasjoinedintothemusicanddrill,thePAsystemattemptstostemthetideofrevolution:CitizensareremindedofGeneralOrder101:massdemonstrationsareprohibited!’
…andinresponse—anddefiance—thedrillcondensesintoa‘massdemonstration’forthefirsthitoftheshow,andthefirstfullsilkguardmoment.Aftertheimpactmoment,thepitintroducesthesecondarymelodicmotifbeneaththenextvoiceover.‘Subversiveelementshaveinfiltratedourranks!Forthedurationoftheemergency,gatheringsofthreeormoreareforbidden!’Hornsripplescatteroutoftheimpactform,landinginsuspiciousposes.Aftertheannouncementthehornlinecondensesintoposedgroupsofthreeandbegintopassthemelodicfigureacrossthestage.
Finallythemelodicfigurebecomesmoreunison,andinresponsethehornlinemoveintoaunifiedform,finishingwithaflourishandbringingtheirarmsupintotheraisedfistsalute.

Theformbreaksapartinresponseto‘disperse’inthevoiceoveraspoundingpianomotifreturns.Theremainderoftheopenerconsistsofaslowprocessoflayeringinsectionswhichmoveasseparatedrillelements[thosenotplayingoccasionallygivingthefistraisedsalute]untilthemusicreachesafinalarrivalpoint/impactfortheOpener…andthedrillreachesaformreferencingourrepeatingvisualmotifofthearrow.
Afteratimedpause,pitresumesonthesecondarymelodywhilesirensoundeffectsfilltheairandlightswarninglightsflashfromatopthetowers.

Theformdisintegratesastheentireensemblescramblesnervously,occasionallylookingupasthoughfearfulofretaliationorbeingwatched,finallylandinginvariousnervousposes.Twofiguresremainun-frightenedinwherethearrowformhadbeen:amusicalsoloist[sketchedhereasamellophone,butcouldbereassignedasneeded]andaguardsoloist.Asthemusicianplaysatense,sadmelody,theguardmemberputsacomfortinghandonhisshoulderandgivesthefist-raisedsalute.
BalladEffects—basedonSlumberMyDarling
AstheflashinglightsgraduallydimandtherepeatingPAannouncementfades,themelodiclineoftheballadbeginswithasoloist[couldbethesameastheendoftheopener,couldbedifferent]towhomtheeyeisdrawnbyadancesoloist,hooddownandmaskdown.Shegraduallymovesthroughouttheform,pullingotherperformerstotheirfeetencouraginglyastheyenterthemusicalphrase,andintroducingtheballadsilk.
Ashornvoiceslayerin,newguardmembersjointheflagphrase.Finally,thehornformcondensesaroundtheoriginal,inspirationalsoloistwhoisliftedintotheairforthemajormusicalandvisualimpactpointoftheballad….Literalizingthethemeoftheshowwhiletherestoftheguardfillsthefieldwithcolor.
Themusicalimpactbuildstoarelease,followedbyaGrandPauseinwhichtheentireensemblereturnstotheraisedfistsalute.Then,ominouschordsinthepitandanewPAannouncementprepareusforthefinalconfrontation:‘Acurfewremainsineffect!Defiancewillnotbetolerated!Useofforcehasbeenauthorized!’

AsthePAcontinuestoblareonaboutacurfewandthelightsflashonthetowers,asinglesnaredrumbeginsthecloserwitha‘wardrum’seemingcalltorebellion.TherestoftheensemblequicklyrestagestodrawattentiontooneofthePAtowerswhereasingleguardmember[hoodup]climbsthetower.
Thesoloistgrabsamegaphonetriumphantly,seemingtosilencethePAmid-sentence.
Thesoloistusesthemegaphonetobeginavocal-percussionchant[interwovenwiththecontinuingsnaredrumandgrowingdrumlineaddinginwithhim]basedon‘STANDUP!’—anotherconnectiontotheshowthemeandtitle.Whilethisdevelopsmusically,theensemblerestagesaroundthethreePAtowerswhichotherguardmembersclimbandbegintothrowthemegaphonesdowntootherperformers.
Theperformerswhocatchthemegaphonesjoinintothepercussionfeatureasthedrumlinecomesforward,againbasedon‘STANDUP!’Themegaphonevocalsintertwinewiththedrumlineandtherestofthehornlineperformsfistpumprelatedvisuals.TherestofthecolorguardlayersouttotransitiontotheClosersilk.Ifdesired,thiswouldbetheperfectmomentintheshowforriflesorotherweapons.
AsthehornlineenterstobegintheCloserproper,thedrumlinepullsbackandwehaveamomentofstraightforwardmusicalandvisualdevelopment.DrilleventuallyopensupintoasingleunifiedforminwhichtheentireensemblecomestogethertosingthedefiantchorusofKnightsofCydonia.
Then,afinalfull-ensemblevisualandmusicalpushtotheend—lotsofcontrarymotiondrillandtheentireguardonthebrightred,closerflag—eventuallydrivingtheentiregroupfrontfieldtodirectlybehindthefence,playingthroughitwhilesomeofthemegaphone-marchersclimbladdershiddenonthebackofthefenceposts.Formerriflescouldevenclimbthroughthefencetospinflagontheoppositeside.
