UNIT 6 -BASIC LAYOUT

DOUBLE-PAGE SPREAD

Two facing pages

PICA GRID Each sheet is

printed with tiny squares which represent pica measurements. A pica is a unit of measurement used by printers.

There are 6 picas to an inch.

Each pica is made up of 12 points.

There are 72 points to an inch.

There is a two-pica shaded area called the trim space. Copy should not be placed in this area.

Do not put any copy in the gutter.

Photos, however, can extend through the trim space for style… called “bleed off the page.”

Place important pictures, graphics or type in the CVI.The CVI usually falls somewhere on the right-hand page.

The WVI usually falls at the bottom left-hand corner of the left page.

Pages are symmetrical.

Don’t settle for an unbalanced layout. This one isheavier on he left page and should be adjusted.

Elements have been rearranged to achieve visual balance.

This is more pleasing to the eye.

FIVE RULES OF YEARBOOK LAYOUT Place one dominant photo on

the double-page spread.

The dominant photo shows action or emotion and should be placed near the gutter of the double-page spread.
