UNIT 4

Specification

I will be designing a Pavilion for my college, Havering Sixth Form , located on the college ground. The whole idea is to create a get together space because not everyone prefers to associate in the Canteen and there is not really a place where students can relax so this pavilion would be very useful. Its possible to use this pavilion for different purposes such as studying spots of summer events which usually occur in the Atrium but the space is very small, where my pavilion will be placed there is enough space for people to watch whatever that is on show. For a summer occasion , the structure will have a stage. My pavilion will be based on geometric shapes which will produce different creative forms.

These are images of the space I want to use to place my Pavilion. It’s a perfectly large space for a relaxed scenario for the students

LOCATION

I had a look at the existing shelters at Havering Sixth Form College, this is where some students sit to eat and socialise with friends and they are not very appealing, it is not every students desire to sit here. I will be designing a pavilion that will certainly draw more attention.

Observations

RESEARCH

While researching into geometric shapes I found these examples, which were very well composed.

Geometric shapes are forms that when combined together fit perfectly. I will be experimenting with triangular and hexagon forms.

ICD/ITKE Research Pavilion at University of StuttgartRESEARCH

It is clear that the structure is formed with hexagon shapes, big and small combined together. It also looks 3D as there is a hexagon in a hexagon, by putting them all together in a way created an interesting curved shape.

I began looking at existing university pavilions and I came across this one. It is quite popular and very futuristic, I love the separate openings and the glowing lights from within

Model Making

Aardrlten pavillion – danillo arsic

I created a model also based on hexagon shapes, big and small with inspiration from The Stuggart Pavilion and the Aardrlten Pavilion. When the model was finished it resembled a beehive form.

This model was formed using hexagon cut out shapes on a flat sheet of cartridge paper. Some of which the bottom had been cut off, I then placed them together using the big and small pieces by that it produced a curved outer structure.

This is a side view of the model with a stairway where people can sit and have conversations.

This shows two entrances which can be used for a Fashion show that usually occurs during Black history month; models can walk from one entrance out of the other down to the staircase then the crowd.

This is a birds eye view of my model. Its interesting the way the hexagons overlap. The model was created by overlapping the hexagons because of the material used, the paper was too light weighted and thin so the pieces were unable to fit together.

The end result was pleasing, even though I didn't’t follow the plan of using geometric shapes that fit side by side, the overlapping technique created a nice model with an appealing outer shape. The model acts on its functions as to have an area where people can sit and talk, opened in-between spaces that will allow sunlight and the ability to view what's on the outside , also two entrances rather than a closed up space. Overall the model is satisfactory.

Pupa Pavilion RESEARCH

This pavilion was designed using recovered cardboard and shipping pallets pieced together by Liam Hopkins. The structure was part of an art project called “Waste Not Want It”. I think its very inspiring to use a material thrown away everyday to create something beautiful. The structure not only made beneficial tons of cardboard and wood, but it created a suitable get-together space that takes advantage of the blissful sounds of cardboard.

Fresh Flower Pavilion

The concept was to design a pavilion for different seasons. I was experimenting with wire using exaggerated square shapes. The pavilion can be for spring period as its green, plants can also grow around it so it will look appealing, the poles will be cool so people are able to lean on it and feel a little refreshment.

After using flat and thin materials such as wire and paper, I decided to work with straws as they have a more thicker form. From exaggerated squares I moved on to stretched triangles. This model was more of an experiment being a new source of material from what I usually use. It was more of experimenting how to work with the straw and what ways it can be folded to create something interesting.

RESEARCH

Bad Hair Pavilion

Margaret Dewhurst’s concept for the Bad Hair pavilion, was inspired by the sensation of wet hair drying over her face. The aim was to create a similar visual effect. The way it flows out has resemblance to my pavilion as its stretched out into the opening

I developed the model by forming one with expanded mixtures of shapes such as squares , triangles and hexagons

This model explores geometric shapes with a more enhanced approach. After experimenting with the straws, I folded it to make a perfect triangle shape, I then repeated the process to make multiples but of different sizes. The pieces were then put together using strips of cello-tape. By placing all the triangles together it made a hexagon shape

Pupa Pavilion

I was pleased with the outcome of my first attempt of creating a geometric example. The use of triangles was a good selection as it formed pointy ends and when put together it formed a shape of its own.

ZA11 Pavilion

This pavilion was a university project designed by the students. Its interesting that it appears as pointy triangles but the open spaces show hexagon shapes from an angle.

RESEARCH

These models explore triangles with folded paper . I was experimenting different ways it can be positioned to create an exciting pavilion. This pavilion is more of a sculpture structure for adornment in which you can walk around it.

Swoosh PavilionRESEARCH

This pavilion was the winner of an AA Summer Pavilion competition. It was placed in London’s Bedford Square designed using timber. The student Valeria Garcia’s and some other students involved, their aim was to create an interactive space where people could share different experiences, like holding informal meetings, sitting, having lunch — all under one roof. This pavilion has inspired me to look into paper folding techniques.

Paul Jackson Paper folding Techniques

RESEARCH

I will be paper folding cones repeatedly using different sizes and then combine them all together to create a geometrical model.

These images where scanned from Paul Jacksons book guide of how to create dynamic paper folding shapes. Most outcomes looked very outer structure-like which would be suitable as a pavilion.

Final Model

This model was handmade using white card for the cones and foam board as the platform and stairway. It was then glued together creating a curvy structure. The idea came about when I began researching into paper folding techniques and with a short time left Cones was one of the easiest paper folding shape that looked triangular.

This shows one of the ideas I suggested of what the Pavilion can be used for. A fashion show is always held during Black History month and I thought it would be more exciting to have it in an open space outside and a different location than the performing studio, there also wouldn’t be controversy of how many people can attend.

I believe the circular openings of the model would work very well for this purpose, as lights would flicker beautifully through the structure

Shadow Pavilion

My inspiration spiraled from looking at the Shadow pavilion. My structures difference is that, it is not as rounded and has two openings. I’m quite pleased and impressed with the outcome especially when I was unsure of what the outcome would be, without any previous experimentation.

I made sure I photographed it showing the curvaceous forms. The black and white effects also display good depth of field and lovely shadows.

I believe the photography looks more exciting than the model itself which is a good thing because the pictures show every angle.

It was interesting to see that the wide opening of the cones I created resembled a flower, like millions of petals put together.

This page shows drawings displaying the pavilion from a birds eye view, other angles and ways in which it works, also shows similarities to the Stuggart Pavilion.

Evaluation

In conclusion, I believe the outcome for my Final idea was successful. I was pleased with the result as the outward structure formed into a series of futuristic pavilions. All pavilions are suited for their purposes which was a good achievement. My final model turned out to be very much modernised and dynamic which is what I desired it to be. I think these pavilions would work for different seasons and I believe it would create a better unity with the students, it may also boosts the colleges reputation. If I had more time or a chance to work on it again , I would explore more into paper folding techniques, and make exciting models from them, all these models where hand made, I would try using the Laser cutter and see what outcomes it produces. Overall I achieved my aims and I enjoyed working on this project.
