Utility - Overview
36kV -
An electrical substation is a subsidiary station of an electricity generation, transmission and distribution system where voltage is transformed from high to lowor the reverse using transformers. Electric power may flow through severalsubstations between generating plant and consumer, and may be changed involtage in several steps.

Control serviceCommands
Report serviceIndications to IEC 61850 clients
GOOSE serviceIndication and information exchange between bay level IEDs
File transfer serviceTransmission of disturbance records
Note: Only commonly used services are mentioned. For more details on services refer IEC61850 7-2 and IEC 61850 8-1
IEC 61850Data model - Logical Node (LN)
Definition
An object which represent a specific function in a domain e.gSubstation automation, Hydro Power plant etc
A named grouping of data and associated services that is logicallyrelated to a function.
Smallest part of a function that exchanges data.
Logical node classes are defined in IEC 61850 7-4
4 letters are used for defining the logical node class e.g. STMP, XCBR
First letter represents the function group which belongs to e.g. in STMP, Sdenote is logical node for a supervising function
A logical node type is created out of classes by adding prefix andinstance number as suffix e.g CNSCSTMP1

Type 1A TripThe trip is the most important fast message in the substation. Therefore, thismessage has more demanding requirements compared to all other fastmessages. Same performance may be requested for interlocking, intertrips andlogic discrimination between protection functions.
IEC 61850Performance requirement Continued
ABB GroupMay 12, 2015 | Slide 45
Type 1B OthersAll other fast messages are important for the interaction of the automationsystem with the process but have less demanding requirements compared tothe trip. The performance for automation functions are typically between theresponse time of operators (order of 1 000 ms) and of protection (order of 10ms). This performance is also valid for such messages between a substationsautomation systems and other local systems.

ICD file IED configurator is responsible for binding incoming data from other IEDs as
defined within an imported SCD file to internal signals, e.g. by means of theSCL Input section, and for generating and loading the IED instance specificconfiguration data, which a CID file could be a part of.

IEC 61850ACSI Abstract Communication Service Interface
Month DD, Year | Slide 53 ABB Group
Reference : IEC 61850 -7-2 Ed 2.0
ACSI defines A hierarchical class model of all information that can be accessed via a
communication network E.g. get the list of Logical nodes under an LD
Services that operate on these classes E.g. Control services like operate
Parameters associated with each service E.g. Control value (ctlVal) carries the value whether to open or close the switch
IEC 61850SCSM Specific Communication Service Mapping
Month DD, Year | Slide 54 ABB Group
It specifies the mapping of the objects and services of the ACSI (AbstractCommunication Service Interface, IEC 61850-7-2) to MMS (ManufacturingMessage Specification, ISO 9506)and ISO/IEC 8802-3 frames.

IEC 61850The goal of the IEC 61850 standard
Month DD, Year | Slide 59 ABB Group
Interoperability The ability for IEDs from one or several manufacturerto exchange information and use the information for thetheir own functions.
Long Term Stability The standard shall be future proof, i.e. it must be ableto follow the progress in communication technology aswell as evolving system requirements.
Free Configuration The standard shall support different philosophies andallow a free allocation of functions e.g. Can work in acentralized architecture as well as distributedarchitecture
