Let’s think back… what is a property?

• A property tells something about an

object that helps identify it, such as

color, texture, shape, and size!

Think of adjectives to describe these

different forms of matter!

Properties of Gravel

• Big • Hard

• Tiny rocks of different sizes

• Doesn’t clump • Water goes

through it

Properties of Sand

• Large • Rough

• Rocks and Shells

• Crumbly • Crunchy Sound • Spreads Out

Properties of Clay

• Small • Red

• See it on fingers • Slight smell • Clumps when

you pinch it • Soft

Properties of Humus

• Tiny roots • Rich with Plant

and Animals• Dark color

• Black • Wet • Soft

• Won’t Clump

• What types of soil would be washed away first? Think about this

component’s properties that would make it so easily washed away!
