Are you looking for an effective way to promote your business? TW Mag for Strawberry Hill and TW11 for
Teddington are each distributed to over 5,000 selected homes and businesses every month.
With rates to suit all budgets – we can also help create artwork
MAY brings us a very green and lush looking area. How fortunate we are never to be
too far away from a tree lined street, park, green, garden or golf club. The trees are looking most majestic now
their foliage is in full flourish.
As the urge to be outdoors becomes more compelling, it can surely be sated with the many fetes and fairs that feature on the events pages this month. I’m always grateful for an opportunity to indulge in a slice of cake and a raffle on a sunny, spring day. I take my hat off to those industrious and inventive people who go to the trouble of organising the various events we list. They invariably take much time and effort to arrange and add a great deal to the community.
With our regular columns and expert advice to keep you entertained and informed, I hope you enjoy this edition of TW Mag and look forward to seeing you again next month.

Councillor’s Update
Local Democracy
BY THE TIME THIS issue of TW Mag goes to print, both the local government and European
election campaigns should be in full swing. I would like to take a few moments to explain some of the local background as it relates specifically to Richmond borough and the Council elections.
Our borough is split into 18 separate wards, each represented by three ward councillors, making a total of 54 councillors. The council is elected for a fixed term of four years.
The configuration of each ward is decided by the Boundary Commission, an independent body set up to make representations to Parliament on these matters. The Boundary Commission is set the target of ensuring that each ward has a roughly similar number of voters. They use natural communities and natural boundaries whenever possible but often ward boundaries have to be adjusted in order to achieve a degree of parity between wards.
As of 1st April 2014 South Twickenham had 7,875 voters in 4,241 households. Although, this will not be the final figure for the election as there are still two more updates to the Register of Electors before it is finalised on 6th May. Please note that 6th May is the absolute deadline to register to vote on 22 May!
We have two polling stations in South Twickenham ward. Holy Trinity Church on Twickenham Green and St Catherine’s School on Cross Deep. On the day, polling stations open at 7am and close at 10pm. At 10pm the ballot boxes from our ward will be sealed and taken directly
from each polling station to the Tennis Hal at St Mary’s University. The votes are counted under the supervision of the Returning Officer for Richmond – the council Chief Executive. Local results should be known by the morning of 23rd May. The last borough elections coincided with the General Election. This year’s local elections have been postponed by a few weeks to 22nd May in order to coincide with the European Elections. It was felt that hosting two separate elections a few weeks apart would be inefficient and a poor use of public funds.
Historically, Richmond upon Thames has a high turnout when compared to other council areas. The nature of elections has changed recently as postal votes are being cast in increasing numbers. At the point of writing 23,000 electors across Richmond borough are currently registered to vote by post. That is an average of well over 1,000 per ward.
The votes for the European elections will be counted on Sunday 25th May across Europe. The first meeting of the newly elected Council will be held on 10th June. Meetings of the full Council are chaired by the Mayor who acts in a non-partisan fashion and ensures that the meetings are run properly.
The final ward surgery of the current term will be on Monday 12th May between 7pm until 8pm at the Council offices in York House. No appointment is necessary as we operate on a ‘drop-in’ basis. However, it is helpful to know what the topic is beforehand in order that we can do some research in advance.
