Why do you go to school? (3-4 sentences)

Bell Work-8/13

Review yesterday’s lesson with someone sitting near you (you can’t get out of your seat---Competition points if everyone is discussing with someone!)

Talk about:

1.Why do you go to school?

2.Who are Daniel Cabrera, Malala, Nehar

3.What are the challenges each of them face

Meet Daniel Cabrera

Daniel (9 years old):• Crouched low behind a improvised wooden

desk, the young boy appears to be using the light from the nearby McDonald's restaurant to help see his homework in the darkness.

• This inspiring photo is believed to be of Daniel Cabrera, a young boy who dreams of becoming either a doctor or a police, who was spotted studying in the streets of the Philippines.

• It is believed he lives with his mother and younger brother in a small, wall less food stall after his father died in prison and his old home burnt down.

• He only owns a single pencil after one of his fellow students stole his second pencil from him.

Meet Malala Yousafzai

• Malala faced life threatening challenges in going to school.

• Girls were not allowed to attend school for awhile and when they finally were, the people who disagreed with this would violently attack the girls to try to scare them into backing down.

• Malala refused to be intimidated and even stood up for the rights for girls to get an education

• Malala believes that books/education is the only way to improve the future.

In Afghanistan . . .

Girls are dressing up as boys in order to get the privilege of going to school

They are sacrificing being who they are and pretending to be someone else

They are risking their standing in society by doing this. If the community found out, they would most likely be shunned.

Assignment

Imagine you are having a conversation with one of the 3 people that we just learned about.

You have just told them your response to the question “Why are you here?” What do they say to you?

Write their response to you.

Think About It---Wrap Up

"Your job as students who are receiving an education is to be aware of your privilege and use this particular privilege called 'education' to do your best to achieve great things, all the while advocating for those in the rows behind you."
