Trick or Treat for UNICEF Project
2013Ms. Levi’s 3rd Grade

of SmyrnaSmyrna, GA
Our class had been learning about the life of Mary McLeod Bethune. She was a Civil Rights activist that fought for equality in education. She even started her own school for African American females…
As an international academy, we instill in our students that the world is bigger than them. We also encourage them to be global
thinkers.
When my students saw the promotional video for Trick or Treat for UNICEF, they were deeply moved. They wanted to make a difference. They set the goal to raise enough money to
purchase a “school in a box”. They wanted to start a school just like Mary Bethune.
They made signs and buttons. They did everything they could to raise awareness and enough money to meet their goal
They were so excited to count and sort the money that they collected. It was also an excellent way to practically use their math skills
My students learned a lot by doing this project….
•They learned that the world in bigger than Georgia and that everyone is not as fortunate as they are.
•They learned what it takes to take action and make a difference in this world.
•They learned how to plan and execute a project/idea.
•They learned the value of perseverance.
•They experienced the joy of a job well done!
