What isvolume?

• The amount of space an object takes up

• UNITS = L or cm3

• 1 mL = 1 cm3

How isvolumemeasured

?

•1. Solid•V = L x W x H

•Example: •L =2 cm, W=1 cm, H=1 cm

•V = L x W x H•V =2cm x 1cm x 1cm

•V = 2 cm3

•Example: V = ?

•V = L x W x H•V =

2cm x 3cm x 5cm

•V = 30 cm3

•2. Volume of a liquid =•graduated cylinder (mL)

•Measure at the MENISCUS

V =73 mL

V = 18 mL

V = 294

mL

V =6.6 mL

V =21.5 mL

•3. Displacement = •to measure volume of an irregular shaped object

•Use graduated cylinder

•V = V with object - V without object

V1 = 7 mL

V2= 9 mL

V = 9 – 7= 2

V = 2 mL

Example:

V1 =11.5 mL

V2 = 20 mL

V = 20 –11.5

V = 8.5 mL

What is

•Amount of matter in an object

•UNIT = gram

When you hit a volleyball, it might hurt just a bit as it bounces off your hands to go sailing over the net. That's because, although a volleyball isn't very massive, the mass it does have makes it resist your effort to change its motion. Bowling balls, on the other hand, possess much more mass than volleyballs do. If you tried to knock a bowling ball over the net, you just might break your arm!
