ice sculpture

base/pavilion

The objective for this 10 day project was to design a base for a fictional ice sculpture, a path to view the sculpture, and a pavilion to shield the area.

This project was spread out over 20 days, where we were charged with the task of creating a new facade for an existing building, then to reprogram the first two levels in plan.

study of

northside library

As a studio, we studied the geometry and spatial qualities of the Northside Branch Public Library, which was funded by Andrew Carnegie. Other studios studied other Carnegie libraries around Cincinnati. As a four person pod, we developed site plans and diagrams, with the ultimate goal of creating an exploded axonometric drawing showing the qualities of the space.

unit construction

This project involved working as a 17 person, studio-wide team. We went through many iterations of “units,” or building blocks with which to construct an array of occupiable spaces at least 60 cubic feet. As a studio, we constructed roughly 48 of these units, as well as digital drawings that highlight the essential qualities of the unit.

layeredcube

We were asked to construct eight blocks, capable of standing on all six sides, that would configure together to form a cube with six solid sides and 3 apertures. The eight blocks were constructed using twelve layers of 1/2” thick medium density fiberboard so when put together, the cube measures 12”x12”x12”. The blocks were designed through a process of abstraction inspired by an I.M. Pei staircase on University of Cincinnati’s campus.cube.

personalcabin

project

The logs pictured are the remains of a cabin from the 1800’s that my family bought with the intention of reconstructing. As a summer project, I assisted them by creating plans and renderings of what the completed cabin will look like. When completed, the cabin will measure 18’x19’ and will include the addition of a loft, storage area, and bathroom.

TOM SEWELL

For my first co-op, I worked with a visual artist named Tom Sewell on the island of Maui. I assisted him with a number of projects, including property management, sculptural assembly, digitizing of slides and negatives from the 60’s-80’s, professional photography work for the New York Times, and editing video clips for his website: tomsewell.com

librarybathroomaddition

While working with Tom Sewell, one of the projects I worked on was to design a way to extend the walls up on the existing library structure and redesign the back porch area to include a bathroom and shower.

James Hubbell

for my second co-op, I worked for james hubbell in santa ysabel, california. james is an artist with an architectural spin- he designs buildings that are like livable sculptures. he also does a lot of work with tile mosaics, stained glass windows, and concrete. I assisted him daily in all of these areas.
