According to the garden books April is a crucial time to invest in the garden. So being away for three weeks wasn’t ideal. Before we left I managed to sow some seeds under cover and plant out seed potatoes & onion sets which are now penetrating the sun-baked clay surface of our veggie patches. The scorched seedlings on the other hand didn’t fair so well. I’ve managed to resurrect courgettes and sprouts but have had to re-sow rocket and salad leaves. The sunny weather is also having a productive effect on the chucks – reliably laying four eggs a day including two very large double-yokers. We’ve also extended our over-flowing compost bin and fixed the trampoline.

Since the beginning of the year we have been busy transforming a derelict room into a youth space at our local church. We’ve installed a sliding garage door, begun fitting glass brick windows and dust-proofed the freshly laid concrete floor. On a shoe-string budget we’ve managed to kit out the room in classic youth club style; Ikea lamps, donated rugs and second hand sofas. We’ve been given a ex-pub pool table, crafted a ping-pong table from some MDF and green paint and scavenged a TV, PS2 and surround sound system. We’ve also created a street football pitch by building a small breeze block partition wall and painting the floor green. May has seen the launch of a new 11-14’s youth club on Sunday afternoons and a lunch time drop-in session for 14-18’s on Tuesdays. We’re also running a youth cell on Friday evenings at Bethanie.
