What Is The StarNet Analyzer?

• What does the StarNet Analyzer do?

• How do I get an SNA test?

• How do I get passing SNA test results?

• How do I read the SNA test results?

• What do I do if I get a failed test result?

• What bandwidth options are available?

What Is The StarNet Analyzer?

• The SNA test monitors an Internet connection for packet loss, latency, consistency, and speed.

• The test is a Java applet that requires Java Version 1.6 or higher.

• Once the SNA client is started it will report an observation back to the server every 5 minutes.

• A complete test takes 48 hours and involves a total of 578 observations.

How Do I Request An SNA Test?

How Do I Get An SNA Test?

•Login to the Star2Star portal, and click on the Dealtrack link.

•Scroll down to the bottom and select the client and location you would like to run an SNA test for.

•Once the General Tab is displayed, click on the StarNet Analyzer tab.

•Fill out the appropriate fields and submit the test.

•Make sure you see a purple and green box and a ticket number.

•Add a comment for duplicate tests.

•We will send you an email with your test within 24 hours.

How Do I Run The SNA Test To Get Passing Results?

Recommended Settings

• Use a dedicated computer, preferably owned by you.

• Install remote access software such as LogMeIn.com, VNC, or Teamviewer.

• Turn off all software firewalls.

• Disable Windows update.

• Disable all power settings.

• Disable anti-virus software as it has skewed test results.

• Run test outside of firewall or router.

• Run test during business hours.

Remote Control

Recommend Testing Case

•Running test in parallel with client

network.

DMZ Port SNA Test

•Setup DMZ port on client firewall

Devices With Known Issues

• Linksys home grade routers and switches

• Sonicwall – must use DMZ

How To Understand SNA Test Graphs

Jitter

Example of a failing jitter graph

Be sure to read the Y axis scale when viewing graphs

Packet Loss

Jitter Results

Excellent

Packet Loss

Passing Test Scale

• Jitter: At or below 15ms average and few spikes of less than 50ms

• Packet Loss: Under 1.5% with a couple of spikes no greater than 3%

• Speed needs to support # of lines x 40 kbits, plus overhead for data usage

• Round Trip Time: At or below 60ms with a couple of spikes

Common Test Problems

• Request does not generate ticket number with purple and green box, likely due to duplicate test request, add

something to comment field.

• Running test behind firewalls returns poor results.

• Running test on computer with heavy usage.

• Running test on computer with software firewall and/or other blocking features

• Test stopped early due to computer issue, total observations should be 578

Common Test Problems

• Windows update downloaded updates while test was running

• Windows 7 computer user must be logged in as Administrator or use the “Run As…” command

What Do I Do After A Circuit Failed The SNA Test?

Fixing Failed Circuits

• DSL and Cable: Try replacing the on-site modem

• Wiring can always be an issue, especially old wires

• Signal levels on DSL and Cable can cause problems

• Overuse of bandwidth can cause issues. Ask the ISP for a data utilization report

• Open a trouble ticket with ISP sighting issues as seen on test results, for example high packet loss %

• Review perimeter network topology

• Consider a different/dedicated ISP

• Last resort: waive 30-day money-back guarantee

Bandwidth Options

Bandwidth Options

• DSL – Good solution for SMB, voice, and data

• Cable – Works well, a lot of bandwidth

• T1 – Small amount of bandwidth but stable

• FIOS – Excellent, lots of quality bandwidth

• Metro-E – Very good for public Internet access

• Fiber – Fast and a lot of bandwidth

• MPLS – Good bandwidth, but must of DIA (Direct Internet Access) option for public IP address

• Wireless – Not reliable, issues with packet loss

Common Circuit Issues

• T1 is not very much bandwidth in regards to current data usage. This is a common bottleneck.

• Wireless circuits tend to be unreliable and can have issues with packet loss at random times.

• It it common for an MPLS to be a private point to point connection.

• Client uses video conferencing or is a heavy video user which uses up a lot of bandwidth.
