• Came to power in 1917, under Lenin promised a “dictatorship of the proletariat”

• But set up one man dictatorship instead, first Lenin, then Stalin

• Seized all land, factories, & private property, outlawed all political parties except COMMUNIST PARTY

• Benito Mussolini founded the Fascist Party in 1919, became prime minister in 1922

• Seized all powers of gov’t & transformed into a totalitarian state

• Italians thought they had more land than what was given in peace settlements

• Faced inflation & huge public debt• Mussolini promised to restore Italy to Rome

Nazism in Germany

• National Socialist(Nazi) came to power in 1933• Plans of Hitler laid out in Mein Kampf

-use of armed forces to remove the restrictions of the V.Treaty into “Greater Germany”

He stopped all political opposition and started to rebuild armed forces

From Ktaught kids glorification of military and to join Hitler Youth

Militarism in Japan

• Long part of tradition-samurai warrior class held in high regard

• War & conquests highest achievement• By 1931 militarists had regained control– Hideko Tojo– Set up military dictatorship– Revived national slogan
