OnSunday,August11,theLindenHillsNeighborhoodCouncil’sEnvironmentandSustainabilityCommitteewillholditssecondinaseriesofSoilRestorationWorkshops.

FundedbyLHiNC,thishealthysoilinitiativeaimstoeducatethecommunityoncarbonsequestrationanditsimpactonclimatechange.

DidyouknowyouryardcouldoffsetyourCarbonFootprint?CarbonsequestrationhelpstoreverseclimatechangebypullingCO2outoftheatmosphere.Italsohelpstheenvironmentbymakinglawnslesssusceptibletodroughtandinneedofwatering,reducesfertilizerrunoffintoourlakesandrivers,andhelpspollinatorsthrive.

TheprojectisheadedupbyLindenHillsresidentandLHiNCEnvironmentalCommitteememberGinnyHalloranandKassieBrownfromRenaissanceSoil.Itbeganinthespring,whenHalloran,BrownanddozensofneighborsconvertedasectionoftheLindenHillsTrolleyPathintoademonstrationsite,showingresidentshowtocreatehealthycarbon-richsoillawnsthroughaeration,compostingandplantingcovercrops.

ThesecondeventisAugust11at1:00p.m.ontheTrolleyPathnear44thandYorkAve.KassieBrownwilldemonstratehowtointerpretsoiltestsandplantno-mowfescuegrassesandothergreatcarbonsequesteringperennials.Attendeeswillgetfreecompostwithmicrobes,sobringcontainers.

DON’TUSEHERBICIDESANDPESTICIDESFertilesoildependsonhealthysoillifeforms.Herbicidesandpesticideskillnotonly“bad”bugslikeaphids,snails,andslugsbutalso“good”bugslikeearthworms,ladybugs,andbees,nottomentionbutterflies,birds,lizards,andothercreatures.Themorelifeformsinyoursoil,themorevigorousyourgarden,andthemoreresistantyourplantsaretoblightanddisease.

DON’TUSESYNTHETICFERTILIZERSSyntheticfertilizerskilllifeinthesoil.Plus,theyarebasicallymadefromfossilfuels.Asplantrootsbegintorelyonsyntheticfertilizerfornourishment,therootsstopworkingwithnaturalsoillifeforms,whichcausesthemtodieoff.Saltsfromsyntheticfertilizersalsoharmorkillsoilmicrobes.Thisweakensanddestroyssoillifeforms,makingplantsincreasinglydependentonmanmadechemicals.

DON’TCOMPACTYOURSOILSticktodesignatedpaths.Walkingonsoilcausescompactionandhurtsandkillssoillifeforms,whichrequiresmallundergroundpocketsofairandwater.Healthy,“living”soilisspongy,becausebeneficialsoillifeformshavebuilttinypocketstocaptureairandwater.Healthysoilabsorbsandholdsatleast30%morewaterthanweakordeadsoil.Indeed,thisproductive,spongysoilmakesyourgardenvirtuallydroughtresistant.Ifyoursoiliscompacted,aerateitwithapitchforkorshovelbeingcarefultodisturbthesoilstructureaslittleaspossible.Amachinecanalsoberentedthatputsairholesinthesoil.

TheseconditemIamproudtobeleadingisasetofworkerprotectionsthatI'mworkingonwithCouncilMembersFletcherandCunningham.IntroducedasaWageTheftPreventionOrdinance,includingconcernsforfreelanceworkers,thisworkwasshapedbytheMinneapolisWorkplaceAdvisoryCommittee(WAC),whichismadeupofrepresentativesfromsmallandlargebusinessesandlabor.InMarch,apresentationonthewidespreadissuewasgiventothePublicHealth,Environment,CivilRights,andEngagement(PECE)Committee,whichisalsowherethepublichearingontheordinancewillbeheldattheendofJuly.

InMay,theMinnesotalegislaturepassedanewlawtoprovideacostshareprogramforresidentsandcitiestohelpintheprotectionofpollinators.CalledLawnstoLegumes,thenewprogramappropriated$900,000forgrantsorpaymentstoplantresidentiallawnswithnativevegetationandpollinator-friendlyflowersandlegumes.Homeownerswhotakepartintheprogrammaybereimbursedforupto75percentofthecosts.

Areaswithahighpotentialforthepresenceofrustypatchedbumblebees-recentlynamedMinnesota’sofficialbee-willbehighpriorityareasforgrants.Homeownersinthoseareaswillbeeligibleforreimbursementofupto90percentofthecostsofaproject.MostofLindenHallsfallswithinthisarea.
