Mission Statement Texas Center for Infectious Disease

The mission of the Texas Center for Infectious Disease (TCID) is to provide high quality medical care, research, and professional education of providers for patients with tuberculosis (TB), and other related infectious, contagious diseases. Health care and diagnostic services will be provided to all referred patients: • Across the age spectrum, except for pediatrics.• As part of the Department of State Health Services

system supporting preventative and treatment services.• Without regard to the ability to pay or other lawfully

protected classification.

Our Tb Patients• All of the Tb cases admitted are “difficult” to manage• Patients are admitted for a variety of reasons:• Drug intolerance• Drug resistance• Hepatoxicity• Safety• Co morbidity• Non-compliance• Social Issues:• Homelessness• Substance abuse• Foreign born • Residency requirements:• Both in state and out of state residents

Admission Day • Admission to Unit• Assigned a negative pressure room• Meet Case manager • Meet nursing staff• Physician completes history and physical• Social Worker meets with patient• Dietary assessment completed by dietician • Substance Abuse counselor• Psychologist completes assessment• Vision and Hearing test’s completed• Sputum collected• Chest x-ray• EKG

Cultural Awareness• Biannual evaluation of patients’ ethnic background• Variety of ethnic holidays and activities are celebrated annually• Community cultural activities are accessible to patients• Cultural preferences of patients are considered-food, clothing
