■ BIM (Building Information Modelling) ‘level two’ which is defined by
PAS 1192-2:2013 as the “Process of designing, constructing or
operating a building or infrastructure asset using electronic object
oriented information”.
6
We can build the building on the
computer before we build it in real life & we can test
everything in advance

7
Government pledged to reduce construction costs by up to 20%
Government require fully collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic) as a minimum by 2016
Why is the industry embracing BIM?

8
Level 0•Working with 2D drawings•Other project information in written documents
The Information Manager & PAS 1192
9
Level 1•May still be using CAD, some 3D drawings / simple models•Introducing structured project information•Introducing structured co-ordination processes
The Information Manager & PAS 1192
10
Level 2•Shift to 3D model with integrated attribute information•Separate model files for architecture, structural, M&E etc•Much project information now embedded in the model•Structured processes for co-ordination essential
The Information Manager & PAS 1192
11
Level 3•Single shared model across project team•Single version of the truth•Structured process to manage co-ordination of information•Integration project insurance, fully collaborative

Role of the Information Manager
The principal responsibilities of the
Information Manager
■ Managing the processes and procedures for information exchange on projects
■ Initiating and implementing the Project Information Plan (PIP) and Asset Information Plan
■ Assisting in the preparation of Project Outputs, such as data drops/Information exchange
■ Implementation of the BIM Protocol, including the updating of the Model Production and Delivery Table (MPDT)

Outline scope of services for the role of
information management
■ To describe the role of Information Management
■ To describe a range of activities that is
consistent and in accordance with PAS1192-2
■ To motivate the development of Information
Management skills
25
The Information Manager & PAS 1192
Common Data Environment Management
■ Establish the Common Data Environment (CDE)
■ Establish, agree and implement the information
structure
■ Receive information into the Information Model
■ Maintain the Information Model
■ Manage the Common Data Environment
26
■ Initiate, agree and implement the Project
Information Plan (PIP) and Asset Information
Plan covering
■ Information structure
■ Provision of information
■ Level of detail of information
■ Incorporating as-constructed, testing
validating and commissioning
■ Enable integration of information within the
Project Team and co-ordination of information
by Design Lead
■ Agree formats for Project Outputs
■ Assist Project Team Members in assembling
information for Project Outputs

27
The Information Manager & PAS 1192
Collaborative working, information exchange
and project team management
■ Support the implementation of the Project BIM
protocol
■ Liaise with and co-operate with Project Team
Members and the Employer
■ Assist the Project Team Members in establishing
information exchange processes
■ Participate in and comply with project team
management procedures and processes

Common Data Environment (CDE)
■ “Single source of information for any
given project, used to collect, manage
and disseminate all relevant approved
project documents for multi-disciplinary
teams in a managed process”
■ May use
■ an extranet
■ a file-based retrieval system or
■ other suitable toolset
The Information Manager & PAS 1192
30
■ A means of providing a collaborative
environment for sharing work
■ Ownership of information remains
with the originator
■ Shared information reduces the time
and cost in producing coordinated
information
■ Documents can be generated from
various combinations of model files
■ Used for version control and audit
trails

BIM Execution Plan (BEP)
The Information Manager & PAS 1192
■ Plan prepared by the suppliers to explain how the information
modelling aspects of a project will be carried out
■ Pre-contract BEPs are assessed by Information Manager as part of
PQQ process
■ Post-contract BEP provides the methodologies of supply chain
adherence to the EIR
