The Cost of Fruit-bearing: Part 1John 15:18-27

MorrisIt is not without its significance that the disciples are to be known by their love, the world by its hatred.

BonhoefferCheap Grace is the deadly enemy of the church. We are fighting today for costly grace.

John 16:33I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

BonhoefferThe price we are having to pay today in the shape of the collapse of the organized church is only the inevitable consequence of our policy of making grace available to all at too low a cost.

BonhoefferThe word of cheap grace has been the ruin of more Christians than any commandment of works.

MaclarenIf we share in Christ’s life, we must, necessarily, in some measure share His fate.

John 5:18This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

John 9:16Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them.

John 9:24So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”

John 18:30-31They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.” 31 Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.”

Acts 14:21-22When they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, 22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.

Matthew 10:16Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

Matthew 10:25It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.

Romans 8:16-17The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Luke 14:27Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

1Peter 4:19Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.

Maclaren‘The world’ will be in antagonism to the church until the world ceases to be a world, because it obeys the King; and then, and not till then, will it cease to be hostile to His subjects.

MaclarenIn a world like this, it is impossible for a man to ‘love righteousness and hate iniquity,’ and to order his life accordingly, without treading on somebody’s corns.

John 16:2They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.

1John 3:13Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you.

Matthew 5:11Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

Matthew 10:22…and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

Philippians 1:29For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake

2 Timothy 3:12Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted

John 3:19And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.

Psalm 2:1-3Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.”

Romans 8:7 …the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God

Galatians 5:19-21Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

2 Timothy 3:1-5But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

1 John 2:15-17Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

John 17:14I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

1Peter 4:11-12…whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.

1 John 3:13Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you.

Hebrews 12:3Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

Hebrews 2:10For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.

1 Peter 3:18For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit

Isaiah 53:5But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

Psalm 18:29For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall.

James 1:2Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds

Acts 5:41Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.
