This section is the guide to allthe clinics licensed by theHFEA. Each clinic offers differentservices and these pages willenable you to find those that canhelp you. While the information inthis guide will be useful for anyoneconsidering fertility treatment, ifyou are thinking of going abroadfor treatment, please note that theHFEA only regulates clinics in theUK. Standards and practices abroadmay differ quite dramatically. Formore advice, please see the HFEAwebsite (www.hfea.gov.uk).
The national statistics (p54)provide an indication, based on theprevious experiences of other peo-ple treated in the UK, of your over-all chances of success when goingthrough treatments. It is importantto keep in mind that each person is different; your chances of suc-cess depend on a great many fac-tors, and you may become pregnantwith more or less treatment cyclesthan the national average.
Many people prefer to be treatedat a clinic near where they live. Themap (p58) shows where clinics inthe UK are located, helping you toidentify those nearest to you. Fulldetails of each clinic are providedlater in this section (from p68), withclinics grouped in the geographicregions shown on the map. Theclinics are then listed alphabetical-ly by clinic name within that region. This is so that you can comparethe services and details of yournearest clinics.
The ‘At-a-glance’ guide (p60)provides a useful summary of clinics’ activities and the servicesprovided. Not all clinics, for example, offer IVF or DI, and if you’re lookingfor something specific, such asgenetic testing, this is the easiestway to find a suitable centre.
‘Other clinics’ on p64 showsclinics which provide specialist
facilities, such as storage clinicswhich only store sperm. This maybe for patients undergoing fertilitytreatment, donors or cancerpatients. Some specialist clinicsoffer facilities for those with viralinfections, which are also listed, asare satellite and transport clinics.Satellite and transport clinics donot provide treatment, but theymay be useful to you in providingongoing tests or sample collection, and donor insemination treatment.
The individual clinic pages(from p68) are listed alphabeticallyby clinic name within the geo-graphic regions shown on thenational map. These pages givecontact details for the clinics andinformation about the services theyprovide. We also include chartsshowing the number of patientsthey treat and the outcomes ofthose treatments. These are divid-ed into different age groups to givean idea of their success ratesacross a range of cases and cir-cumstances, with the option offinding a clinic with a track recordin treating patients in similar cir-cumstances to your own. Pleasenote that each clinic can see awide mix of patients of differentages. There are a variety of factorsthat affect infertility and treatmentoutcome, and some cases aremore complex than others. Thisshould be borne in mind whencomparing clinic performances.
There is a fold-out guide on theback cover of this Guide with moreinformation about how to read thefigures and charts provided on theclinic pages, plus a list of usefulquestions that you may wish to aska clinic when you visit.
There is further statistical infor-mation on the HFEA website(www.hfea.gov.uk), which allowsyou to search for clinics accordingto your own criteria, such as thetreatment you are looking for. P

The chart above relates to all licensed treatments throughout theUK involving fresh embryos where patients received fertilitydrugs and used their own eggs. It shows two important piecesof information.
Firstly, each vertical bar represents the percentage of peoplereceiving treatment (from the total number) at a given age. Thedistribution curve is fairly symmetrical, with the most commonage for a patient receiving treatment being 35. Where there arelarge numbers of patients receiving treatment at a certain age, more confidence is attached to the accuracy of the live birth ratefigure. Conversely, where there are fewer numbers of patientsreceiving treatment at a given age (such as those below 26 or above42 years), less confidence is attached to the live birth rate figure.
Live birth rates for patients younger than 22 years and older than45 years have not been included because these would not bestatistically accurate owing to the very small numbers of patientsreceiving treatment in these age groups. (A live birth event iswhere one or more live children are born as a result of a singletreatment cycle and the live birth rate in the above graph is foundby dividing the number of live birth events by the number oftreatment cycles started.)
Secondly, the chart also shows a relatively consistent live birthrate for patients aged up to 35 years and then a steady declinewith age. Patient age is the major factor that influences the suc-cessful outcome of IVF treatment for patients using freshembryos created from their own eggs.

The national statistics provide an indication, based on the previous experiences of other peopletreated in the UK, of your overall chances of success when going through treatments. It isimportant to keep in mind the fact that each person is different – your chances of successdepend upon a great many factors and you may become pregnant with more or less treatmentcycles than the national averages.
These charts show: the national averages for successful IVF treatment across different agegroups; the different types of infertility diagnosed by clinics; the types of IVF procedures used; and the likelihood of multiple births for people having IVF treatment. The data on whichthese charts are based relates to treatments which took place between 1 April 2002 and 31March 2003.

CAUSES OF INFERTILITY IN PATIENTS HAVING IVF AND ICSI TREATMENT IN THE UK
The chart above shows the causes of infertility by percentage for allcouples going through licensed IVF treatment. It can be seen thatmale factor is the most commonly recorded type, representingnearly a third of all instances recorded. Although “unexplained” is the next highest category, “multiple factors” represent anothersignificant proportion.
It is worth noting that although the categories listed in the chart arecommonly used, some clinics may diagnose and categorise patientsdifferently. A glossary of the terms used follows:-
◆ Male factor – refers to a low sperm count or abnormal spermwhich would typically make it difficult for the sperm to fertilise an egg
◆ Unexplained – is where a specific problem could not be foundfor either the man or the woman
◆ Multiple factors male and female – at least one cause ofinfertility was found for both the man and woman
◆ Tubal disease – is where structural or functional damage existsfor one or both Fallopian tubes, making it difficult for the egg to befertilised by a sperm or for an embryo to travel to the uterus
◆ Ovulatory disorder – is where the ovaries are not producingeggs normally
◆ Other causes – include chromosomal abnormalities, seriousillness, cancer treatment, etc.
◆ Multiple factors female – more than one cause of infertilitywas found for the woman
◆ Endometriosis – is where the lining of the uterus is found inabnormal locations (most often behind the uterus or on theovaries)
◆ Uterine factor – is where a structural or functional disorder ofthe uterus affects a patient’s fertility

The chart above shows that in the vast majority of licensed IVFtreatments, patients use their own fresh eggs and embryos. Livebirth rates for fresh eggs are consistently higher than those forfrozen eggs or embryos. Typically, fresh embryos are used in thefirst treatment cycle whilst any remaining embryos may be
frozen and used in subsequent treatments. While egg donation offers an effective treatment for certain
types of infertility (such as premature ovarian failure), donatedeggs are only used in a small percentage of IVF treatmentsoverall.

There is a direct correlation between the number of embryosreplaced and the likelihood of a multiple pregnancy. Multiplepregnancy is associated with a range of complications, includingmiscarriage, early delivery and long term handicap. Delivery of asingle baby is therefore the optimal outcome for most people.
The percentage of multiple births is reducing each year with overthree-quarters of all births resulting from licensed HFEA treat-ments being singletons. However, the number of twins and
triplets born as a result of IVF is still high compared with multiplebirths from spontaneous pregnancies.
(Please note that this data records birth rates from treatmentstaking place before an amendment to the HFEA Code ofPractice, published in January 2004. The Code now states thatno more than two embryos should be transferred in any onetreatment cycle for women under 40, and no more than threeembryos in a cycle for women aged 40 or over.)

Other clinicsThese pages provide information aboutclinics which offer specific facilities forinfertility treatment.
The clinics that have facilities for patientswith viral infections are those offering spermwashing, DI/GIFT or storage for people withHIV, Hepatitis or other viral infections. Thesatellite and transport clinics are clinics which
provide early stages of infertility treatmentwith the later stages of treatment beingcarried out at a main hospital or clinic. Thismeans that you may be able to have someparts of the treatment at a clinic closer toyour home. The storage clinics are spermbanks which store sperm but do not offer anyform of treatment.

These typesof patients are referred to as ‘fee-paying’ onthese pages.

How to read the clinic pagesThis page is a key to reading the following 85 clinic pages. At the end of the booklet there is a fold-out page to help you directly cross-reference the information
◆ For demonstration purposes, the chart belowshows national data for live births. The live birth ratecharts shown on the individual clinic pages give therelative success rates for that clinic between differenttreatment cycles involving fresh and frozen embryosby different age groups (a live birth event is where oneor more children are born in a single event). The rateis calculated by dividing the number of live birthevents by the number of treatment cycles started.Select the age group you are interested in along thebottom of the chart and use the vertical scale on theleft hand side to read the live birth rate percentagefrom the top of each column.
The number of treatment cycles (n=) is veryimportant because the data is more reliable andaccurate if there are more cycles to compare.
◆ IVFEggs removed from the ovaries are fertilised withsperm in a laboratory dish before being placed intothe woman’s body.◆ ICSIThe procedure involves injecting a single spermdirectly into the centre or cytoplasm of an egg whichis then placed in the woman’s body usingconventional IVF methods.◆ DIThe introduction of donor sperm into the vagina, thecervix or womb itself. Using a fine tube, the doctor ornurse places the semen into the neck of the womb orthe uterus. ◆ IUIInsemination of sperm into the uterus of a womanwith ovarian stimulation for the woman andpreparation of the semen.◆ GIFTA procedure in which eggs are retrieved from awoman, mixed with sperm and immediately replacedin one or other of the woman’s fallopian tubes so thatthey fertilise inside the body (in vivo).◆ PGSOne or two cells from an embryo are removed to betested to ensure they contain the correct number ofchromosomes (known as euploidy) and not more orless than usual (known as aneuploidy). ◆ PGDOne or two cells from an embryo are removed to betested for specific genetic disorders/characteristicsbefore embryo transfer takes place.
Thaw cycles **** **** Thaw cyles: when frozen embryos are to be used for intra-uterine transfer, they are thawed out at the appropriate stage of the menstrual cycle. Not allembryos survive the freeze/thaw procedure and the chance of pregnancy isreduced when using frozen embryos when compared with fresh embryos.
