Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed the
holidays with family and friends and have
been staying warm as of late. Although
we didn’t have a white Christmas I think
we were spoiled with the warm tempera-
tures. We are half way through our Chap-
ter year and I can’t believe just how fast it
has gone by!
We had three fun and successful events
this past quarter, including a co-hosted
Student Night at UWSP with the IMA, an
interactive and comical roundtable fraud
seminar that was new for us, as well as
our Mr. Excel seminar just month ago that
was quite illuminating and beneficial. We
received excellent feedback on the
roundtable approach with the smaller
group we had so I hope we can bring this
approach back to the Chapter and gain
more participation from our members.
See Page 3 for more on the events.
We have a few seminars coming up in
2015 with speakers I have seen before, so
get excited and note the dates. Check out
Page 2 for more on upcoming events.
I am excited to announce that our Chapter
has once again achieved Platinum status
for the prior year! Moreover, we are cele-
brating our 35th year as a Chapter this
year! These are both awesome accom-
plishments that we should be proud of as
we support our Chapter and profession.
In order to achieve accomplishments
such as we have, our Chapter thrives
on volunteerism. As I have men-
tioned in previous messages, I am dis-
appointed that I have been unable to
find volunteers for the open positions
we have in our Chapter. Thankfully
our Cheddar Letter Editor and Board
Member/Event Planner has stepped
up and taken on more responsibility
for the Secretary role, but we are still
in need of finding a member to assist
in the Treasurer role or even as Sec-
ond Vice President. Neither of these
opportunities requires an inordinate
amount of time and our Chapter’s
success and existence depends on vol-
unteers to fill these roles. Who
doesn’t like building their resume and
effecting change in a Chapter they
belong to and events they attend?
Please reach out to me if you or
someone you know has any interest.
I’d be glad to give you more details
and assist in the role itself.
Please get in touch with me if you
have any interest or questions. Stay
tuned for future correspondences for
upcoming seminars while staying
warm!
Warm regards, Nick Geffers

On November 6th, the IIA host-
ed a Roundtable / Mystery
Fraud event. The roundtable
portion of the event allowed
participants to network with
other members like never be-
fore. Here is how it worked:
participants selected topics
that they were interested in
discussing with their peers,
submitted questions pertaining
to those topics in advance and
facilitators guided participants
through a discussion of the
questions. The groups were
small allowing for good
knowledge transfer/discussion.
The second half of the event
was a Mystery Fraud scheme.
Our company, Safe-T-Accounts,
was hired by health insurance
provider, Rest Insured, Inc. to
help them determine why their
ambulance costs were increas-
ing over the past few years.
We laughed our way through
this hilarious parody while
learning how to perform fraud
investigations, interviews and
data analysis. Thanks to our
instructor, Timothy Hunger-
ford, actors, interviewers and
scribes, we were able to break
the case and identify the fraud!

EVENTS! EVENTS! EVENTS!
We recently co-hosted an Accounting Student “Speed Networking” Event with the Heart of Wisconsin chapter of the IMA. The event invites Ac-counting students at UW Stevens Point to an evening of networking and information gathering about the various career paths of accountants. Career paths included industry ac-counting, internal audit, not-for-profit/government accounting and public accounting.
The evening began with networking over hors d’oeurves. It transitioned into 7 minute “speed networking” sessions where the students met in small groups with one of nine ac-counting professionals who shared their background and gave the stu-dents an opportunity to ask ques-tions. Although the group was small, most shared that they appreciated the intimacy of the event allowing valuable networking connections to be made.
Thank you to Marcie Amar (Sentry In-surance) and Carrie Luedtke (River Val-ley Bank) for representing the IIA. We are always looking for opportunities to reach out to college students and introduce them to the world of Internal Audit. If you know of an upcoming op-portunity or a contact at one of the local colleges, please contact Ken Steph-ani, Academic Relations committee, at kstephani@societyinsurance.com.

UW-Stevens Point Student “Speed Networking” Recap
“The most difficult thing in any negotiation, almost, is making sure that you strip it of the emotion
and deal with the facts.” – Howard Baker
“This is a classic negotiation technique. It’s a gentle, soft indication of your disapproval and a
great way to keep negotiating. Count to 10. By then, the other person usually will start talking
and may very well make a higher offer.” – Bill Coleman
“A negotiator should observe everything. You must be part Sherlock Holmes, part Sigmund
Freud.” – Victor Kiam
“Place a higher priority on discovering what a win looks like for the other person.” – Harvey Rob-
bins

A farmer sends his accounting sheepdog,

“You asked me to round them up,”
barks Spot.

Signs You Work in Accounting/Audit:
~ You lecture the neighborhood kids sell-
ing lemonade on ways to improve their
process and controls.
~ You refer to the tomatoes in your gar-
den as deliverables.
~ You find you really need PowerPoint to ex-
plain what you do for a living.
~ You wear gray to work instead of navy blue
or black to make a bold fashion statement.
~ You ask your friends to “think outside the
box” when making Friday night plans.
~ You think Einstein would have been more
effective had he put his ideas into a matrix and
used tickmarks.
