When: June 6, 1944 (lasted until August 1944)

Who: The Allied Forces (in particular the United States, Great Britain, Canada and Free France)

What: Allied invasion of Nazi territory in Western Europe

Where: Normandy, France (5 Beaches: Omaha, Utah, Juno, Sword, Gold)

Why: To get Allied troops on the ground in an effort to liberate France and make a push toward Germany

How: Surprise attack by air and sea

176,000 troops

5,000 ships

30,000 vehicles transported

13,000 paratroopers flown in over 800 planes

More than 300 planes dropped 13,000 bombs on Normandy countryside immediately before the invasion

By nightfall June 6th, there were over 9,000 casualties (3,000 dead) and over 100,000 soldiers had come ashore

D-day invasion began with an attack by American paratroopers (101st & 82nd US Airborne Divisions)
