Introduction

• Sex ratio at birth: Statistical indicator computed as: The number of boys being born per one hundred girls (UNFPA).

• Normal SBR: 104-106 boys every 100 girls • Important demographic indicator

– Doubling-time of population– Critical demographic measures– Trends in infant morbidity (low birth weight,

mortality male infants…)

Methodology

• A part of CHILILAB database• Fertility, Mortality, Marriage, Migrants,

SES and basis Health Information.• Every 6 months from 2003 to date• Births from 2005-2010• Merge with parental information and

preceding child/children• Analyze: descriptive and linear and

multiple regression

Results

Discussion

• 2005 – 2008, SBR is 112.3, equivalently to the national rate (111/100 – VPHC, 2009)

• Parents choose sex of child (boy) at the first child (114/100) or the 3th one and above (176/100)

• SBR is highly related to the sex of preceding child/children, mother’s education, occupation and SES.
