The Europa series

• Europa, a figure from Greek mythology, is the new face of the euro. Her portrait appears in the hologram and the watermark of the second series of euro banknotes, which is called the Europa series

• The Europa series incorporates advances in banknote technology and is even more secure than the first series

• The new banknotes are to be introduced gradually over several years, in ascending order and starting with the €5 banknote in May 2013, and the new €10 banknote in September 2014

• The first series will remain legal tender and circulate alongside the Europa series until further notice

Easy to check and harder to counterfeit

With their enhanced security features, the new €10 banknotes are more resistant to counterfeiting. And, like the banknotes of the first series, they are easy to check.

Just follow the three-step ‘Feel, Look and Tilt’ procedure.

Feel

12

Special paper substrate and printing processes give the banknotes their unique feel

(1) Feel the banknote. The banknote paper is made of cotton and should feel crisp and firm.

Feel of the paper

Raised print (2) Feel the banknote. It has a series of short raised lines on its left and right edges on the front to make identification easier, especially for visually impaired people. The main image, the lettering and the large value numeral also feel thicker.

Look

15

16

Look at the banknote against the light. The portrait watermark (1) and security thread (2) become visible

Portrait watermark Look at the banknote against the light. A faint image becomes visible and shows a portrait of Europa (a figure from Greek mythology), the value of the banknote and a window. The portrait is the most prominent feature of the watermark and also appears in the hologram. The watermark is embedded in the paper and can be seen on both sides of the note.

17

Portrait watermark against the light

Value numeral in the top-right part of the watermark A watermark is produced by varying the thickness of the paper. If you put the banknote on a dark surface, the light areas become darker – this effect is easy to see in the value numeral in the top-right part of the watermark.

18

Security thread Look at the banknote against the light. The security thread, which is embedded in the banknote paper, will appear as a dark stripe. The € symbol and the value of the banknote can be seen in tiny white lettering in that stripe. The exact position of this tiny white lettering varies from note to note.

Tilt

Tilt the banknote. The hologram (1) reveals a portrait of Europa and the emerald number (2) displays an effect of the light that moves up and down

Portrait hologram Tilt the banknote. The hologram – the silvery stripe on the right of the note – shows a portrait of Europa (a figure from Greek mythology) as well as a window and the value of the banknote.

23

Emerald number

Tilt the banknote. The shiny number in the bottom left corner displays an effect of the light that moves up and down. The number also changes from emerald green to deep blue depending on your viewing angle.

Microprint Some areas of the banknote feature a series of tiny letters. This microprint can be read with the aid of a magnifying glass. The letters are sharp, not blurred.
