Weems Baskin InvitationalUniversity of South Carolina
Meet Preview:
With spring officially started, the UMBC Outdoor Track & Field team opens the
season this weekend, competing in the Weems Baskin Invite hosted by the
University of South Carolina. With an elite group of twenty athletes training in the
Palmetto State since Tuesday, this early season invite should provide a glimpse into
what may be in store for the rest of season.
In the sprints, look for Mercedes Jackson to continue to dismantle the record books
in the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes. With an indoor 200 meter time that
already surpasses the current record, the wider curve and 100 meter straight away
should bring UMBC its first sub 23 second performer. Also watch for Deborah
Adelola, Kirsten Jones, and Kalane Abbey to put up some stellar early season 400
meter times, and Paulette Fogle should put herself in school record contention in
the 400 meter hurdles.
In the distance events, Andrew Smith will bump up in distance to compete in his
first official 1500 meter run. A strong indoor season and recent practices suggest a
top ten all time performance. In the 800 meters, look for Cody Mezebish to build
off her indoor performance of 2:14.95, and also put herself on the all time list.
The field events will be highlighted by throwers, with Amanda Deller fresh off twoindividual championships at the Indoor Conference Meet. The crew of Deller,
Chrissy Robinson, Aaron Brooks, and Cameron McDearmon will all be pulling triple
duty in the shot, discus, and hammer.
In the jumps, Aboshioma Obemeata will look to continue his strong performances
from indoor, and hopefully garner an IC4A berth and make a run at the NCAA East
Regional. Additionally, Mo Drammeh will continue his efforts at eclipsing 6’ 10”.

Athlete Spotlights
Chrissy Robinson:
Despite not receiving the headlines, senior Chrissy Robinson is wrapping up a historicall
great career in the throws. She first came to UMBC as a member of the UMBC Basketba
team, who moonlighted as a thrower, winning the Outdoor AEC title in the shop put in
the spring of her freshman year despite limited competitions and practice. She
continued playing basketball through her sophomore year, this time making an
appearance at the Indoor America East Championship and finishing second. Robinson
went on to finish 3rd
in the Outdoor Championship before switching over to track full
time and finishing 4th in the Indoor and Outdoor Championships as a junior, and took 2n
this past indoor season. She enters her final season of competition as the 4th
best shot
putter in school history.
Josh Hewitson:
No one has seen more IC4A finals over the past three years than senior Josh Hewitson
who just wrapped up his third appearance in the 500 meters over the past three years.
Hewitson currently holds the 500 meter indoor school record, but can also be found 3rd
All Time on the indoor 400m list, as well as 6th
and 9th
on the outdoor 400 meter and
800m All Time lists respectively. Not to mention he holds the 10th
best mark in school
history in the 400 meter hurdles as well. Heading into outdoor he is looking to be
become on the fourth Retriever to go under forty-eight seconds in the 400 meter dash.
Inside the Numbers:
Years since Allen Hamlin set the 110 Meter Hurdles record at 14.40, representing the
oldest record on the books. It has since been tied by Bryan Beadle in 1997, however cou
be challenged by Trae Proctor who went 14.46 last year, but has run significantly faster
this year through indoor.37
