The Algebra Lab Way

How to play

Each group of 2 will get 2 cards (face-down) Dealer will deal (face-up) cards for the groups to choose

from. An algebra problem will be presented to the class. Once

you and your partner think you have the right answer, bring it (paper ONLY) to Mr. Schuler to check. If the answer is correct, you may choose a card to add to your hand. If your answer is incorrect, return to your group and try again.

Repeat for Questions B and C. Question D will be played so that the groups can “trade-in” a card to try to better their hand.

Winner is determined by the best poker hand at the end of 4 questions.

Round 1…

Pencils and Paper ready!!!

Question 1A

Write the point-slope form of an equation of the line that passes through the pair of points

(2, -3) and (-2, 5)

Question 1B

Write the standard form of an equation of the line that passes through the given point and has the given slope.

(1, -4) and m=-3

Question 1C

Write an equation in standard form of a line with the given slope and y-intercept.

m=½ and b=-1

Question 1D

Write an equation, in standard form, containing the given points.

(6, 0) and (0, 3)

Round 2…

Pencils and Paper ready!!!

Question 2A

Graph the following line using the slope and y-intercept:

y x 4

53

Question 2B

Graph the following line using the point and slope:

y – 6 = -3(x – 2)

Question 2C

Find the x and y intercepts of the line, then graph the line:

3x – 2y = 12

Question 2D

Solve for y, then use the slope and y-intercept to graph the line:

x – 2y = -8

Round 3…

Pencils and Paper ready!!!

Question 3A

Write an equation of a line in point-slope form that passes through the point (3, -1) and is parallel to the following equation: y=1/4 x +2

Question 3B

Write an equation of a line in slope-intercept form that passes through the point (3, -2) and is perpendicular to the following equation: y=-3x-5

Question 3C

Write an equation of a line in standard form that passes through the point (0, 4) and is parallel to the following equation: y=-2x-3

Question 3D

Write an equation of a line in point-slope form that passes through the point (-5, -3) and is perpendicular to the following equation: y=2/3 x + 3

Round 4…

Pencils and Paper ready!!!

Question 4A

The elevation of Houston is 120 feet. The elevation of El Paso is 4000 feet. The distance between the two cities is a straight line of 760 miles. Traveling from Houston to El Paso, what is the rate of change of the elevation?

Question 4B

If the air temperature is 76ºF at 8AM and 92ºF at 4PM, find the rate of change of temperature per hour.

Question 4C

A person’s rate is the amount that he or she earns per hour. If you earn $500 for a 40-hour work week, what is your pay rate?
