Hi HTG,

I’m really excited about another new year with you all. Can

you believe we’re celebrating five years since our launch on

the 20th Jan this year? I can hardly believe it myself. It really

has gone in a flash.

We’re going to be making a big deal of that anniversary, so look out for our invite

cards in the post and why not make the most of it to invite a friend along to help us

celebrate on the 20th? The five year anniversary will be a big deal, but it’s not he

biggest thing we’ll be doing this term. No, there’s two other things I’m even more

excited about.

The first is our ‘shadows of the cross’ morning preaching series. The OT is full of rich

and wonderful teaching about the meaning of Jesus death, and I can think of nothing

more worthy of our time and attention than Jesus death. So we’re going to be

examining some of the main passages together through out our morning preaching

this term. I expect we’ll be richly blessed by spending this term thinking deeply

about what Jesus has done for us.

Perhaps even more exciting is the way we are going to end this term – from the 17th

to the 24th March we’ll be hosting a Moore College Mission. You’ll hear a lot more

about this as the term goes on, but just to introduce the idea Moore is the

theological college I studied at in Sydney. Every year they send out the college

students in mission teams around Australia and one team goes to an international

location. This year they’ve asked to send a team to us! The students will be working

with us to promote Jesus to our community. We’ve planned a great programme of

events and activities to attract our friends, and to reach out to them too.

I want to ask you to join with me in urgent and persistent prayer that this term might

be a great time of growth for us – in knowing and loving Jesus better; in becoming

more like him; and in seeing dozens of others come to know and love him too as we

proclaim him.

Our next Christianity Explored course begins with a taster session and free meal on

Thursday January 24th, 8pm.

Christianity Explored is an informal course for those interested in finding out more

about the Christian faith or who just want to brush up on the basics. The course

explores the Gospel of Mark and asks the questions at the heart of Christianity:

Who is Jesus?

Why did he come?

What does it mean to follow him?

You don’t need to know anything about the Bible.

You won’t be asked to read aloud, pray or sing.

You can ask any questions you want.

So if you’ve joined us over the Christmas period, made it your New Years resolution to

get to know Jesus better or simply want to get a better handle on who Jesus is and

what it means to follow him then this is the perfect course for you.

The course runs on Thursday nights at 8pm for 7 weeks. For more information or to

let us know that you’re coming to the free taster session contact the office on 0191

580 0608 or fill in the form on our website at:

Strong marriages are an essential part of a healthy church and a healthy society,

benefitting not only couples who are married but also any subsequent children as well

as other individuals around them. At HTG we want to invest in our marriages and help

others to do the same. So this term, beginning on Monday January 21st, we’ll be

running The Marriage Course again.

The Marriage Course provides tools to build strong relationships within marriage and

gives couples the opportunity to talk about important issues which can get swept

under the carpet in the rush of daily life.

While the course is based on Christian principles, it is designed for couples with or

without a church background. The course is held over seven evenings and is suitable

for any couples who have been married for 2 to 50+ years.

On Sunday evenings this term we’re back in the

desert in Exodus again. More specifically we’re once

again at the foot of Mount Sinai rejoining the

Israelites as they receive God’s laws and covenant to

be God’s people. We’ll be moving at some speed

through Exodus this term as we study chapters 20-40

(that’s the end).

The recommended book for our series in Exodus

remains Alec Motyer’s ‘The Message of Exodus’, IVP

ISBN-10: 0830824278

In this warm-hearted and insightful exposition, Alec

Motyer unfolds what Exodus testifies about the

Bible's God, in what ways it points to Jesus Christ and

heralds him in advance, and how it bears on the nature and life of the people of God -

their redemption, obedience, security and inheritance. You can order this book

through our website, just click on the ‘Books and Resources’ on the front page .

On Sunday mornings in January through March we’ll be doing a series entitle

‘Shadows of the Cross’. In the series we’re seeking to pull out the wonder of the cross

by looking at it through the lens of the Old Testament. As we study we’ll see how

events like Passover and The Day of Atonement

foreshadow what Christ would later do on the cross.

The recommend book for the series is John Stott’s

c lassic ‘The Cross of Chr ist’ , IVP

ISBN13:9781844741557 which is always on the

bookshelf at HTG. In this magisterial and best–selling

book, John Stott explains the significance of Christ’s

cross and answers the objections commonly brought

against biblical teaching on the atonement.

You can order this book through our website, just click

on the ‘Books and Resources’ on the front page .

In home groups this term we’ll be studying Revelation chapters 2 and 3 which contain

the letter to the seven churches. To each church Jesus says, ‘He who has an ear, let

him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’ These seven messages are rooted in

the particular challenges faced by each congregation.

But they are not just what the Spirit spoke to one

church back then. Through these messages, the Spirit

also speaks to the churches of our day, who face the

same challenges and temptations now as they did

then.

Jesus brings a message of comfort and hope to those

who are under pressure. He brings a wake-up call to

those who are compromised. In love, He speaks of the

love that matters most. He tells us what is truly

important. He offers great resources to those who

remain faithful. He promises great rewards to those

who overcome.

Women’s Fellowship continues to meet on Thursday

mornings with the aim of studying the bible together,

praying together and supporting and encouraging one

another. This term Women’s Fellowship are looking at

what the Bible says about being a woman. Topics

include what God says about marriage, singleness and

beauty .

To help study the Bible we’ll be using the good book

guide to biblical womanhood ISBN 9781907377532 .

The book will be available for everyone to buy at the

start of term
